Immortal Ambition and Blood Rage Interaction Question

Hi guys,

I have a question about how Blood Rage and Immortal Ambition interaction.

I understand that the regen of ES should start once you reach full HP, but when i have blood rage active i never reach full HP. When blood rage is active i dont degen hp but since i have more HP per second then the degen but I never go up to full life, I stay at 5693 out of 5699 at the time of writing.

When i hit mobs and actually start leeching life with Blood Rage on it never reaches full and therefor my Immortal Ambition doesnt trigger and ES doesnt start to fill up.

If i put in a life leech Jewel and don't activate Blood rage i start to regen ES and Immortal Ambition works as intended.

I've been looking at similar builds as mine on Poe.Ninja (SST) and all who use the Glorious Vanity jewel also use blood rage, so my question to the ones on the forum who play with these two interactions does it work for you?

Can anyone answer if this is a bug (because it's been like this for me for a very long time with my HP not regening to full) or is it intended for the HP to never reach full while using Blood Rage?

I think the best explanation for what is going on is that for every calculation sequence in which you would be at full life and leeching Energy Shield, your degen rate far outpaces your Energy Shield leech rate, so you are still at a "net degen" for your Energy Shield. This is because your Energy Shield Recovery Rate is based on your maximum Energy Shield, which I'm expecting is quite small, whereas Blood Rage degens based on BOTH your Life and Energy Shield at all times.

Like if I pull your character into POB, I'm seeing total max ES of 438. Immortal Ambition incurs a natural ES degen of 5% per second. According to Wiki/Patch 3.8.0 patch notes, default ES leech cap is 10%: https://pathofexile.fandom.com/wiki/Leech

which means that, without Blood Rage activated, the fastest you could possibly recover ES via Leech is 10%-5% = 5% of your max ES, which is 438 * .05 = 21.9 ES per second.

Meanwhile, no matter what, at all times, Blood Rage will deal 5699 * .04 + 438 * .04 = 245.48 physical damage per second. I'm too lazy to look at your damage reduction against physical DOT but even if you had an insane amount of phys DOT reduction like 60%, 245.48 * .4 = 98.2 damage per second = way, way, more damage taken than Energy Shield you could possibly be recovering.

Therefore there is nothing mechanically wrong happening here. It would "work as [you] intended" if you could enter developer mode and magically set your ES leech cap to, say, 5000% of your maximum ES per second rather than 10% of your maximum ES per second.

I'm quite certain that most players use Immortal Ambition for the "overleech," aka making sure that their Life Leech effects don't end when reaching full life. In that sense, even if your Energy Shield permanently looks like it's at 0, Immortal Ambition is still "working for you" as it is still providing the insane value of not removing your Life Leech effects when you reach Full Life.

Thank you for a great explenation, that is probably it. Ive been looking at the ES ignoring the fact that life leech doesnt end whilst at full HP which as you say is adds alot of value.
