Unique "Hrimsorrow" Goathide Gloves on Ranger lvl 14

Created a new character and as I progressed, I received a unique drop somewhere in the ledge after killing a monster.

Unique Goathide Gloves "Hrimsorrow".

Is this common, or did I get lucky?

Look at trade.

It's a common drop.

But it's not common at your low level, because unique drops are not common there.

In Path of Exile, Uniques generally play the role of 1) providing access to a mechanic that is difficult/impossible to get on normal/magic/rare items at full magnitude (also known as "build-enabling uniques," 2) lore-building flavour, or 3) items useful for leveling. The vast majority of Unique Items you'll find will be of type 2+3 (flavour/leveling), a significant chunk will be outdated or niche build-enabling uniques that most players don't want, and only a very tiny select few will be ones that are overpowered, highly valued by players, and/or unusual drops. The game developers intend that a perfect rare will always be better in raw power than a Unique with similar modifiers.

As cynical long-time players would put it, "99.99% of Unique drops are trash."

Two very good tools for pricechecking things yourself.

poe.ninja is a third-party site (not sure I would recommend new players try to use it, though, it feels like a little bit more on the advanced side of things; would be much more useful once you beat the storyline and reach Maps) that tracks economy and builds based on what it can observe from the trade APIs. Going to Unique Armours and searching for "Hrimsorrow" shows that its apparent value is 1 chaos orb - chaos orbs are the most common form of endgame trading currency.

At https://www.pathofexile.com/trade you can look at actual buy and sell offers for items (just sell for things like Unique Armours). Searching for Hrimsorrow (I usually use the dropdown that autoselects the full name -> Hrimsorrow Goathide Gloves) shows that, yes, people are generally trying to sell these things for 1 chaos each, confirming the poe.ninja market data.
