Memory usage too low?

This is going to sound odd, but i'm wondering if something has gone wrong with my client.

My memory usage is really low. Pretty consistently under 4G, mostly under 3G. And yet i'm having huge long load times, and streaming pauses in-game all the time, making the game far more deadly than it was before the streaming changes.

Is there some option I can set to keep more stuff in memory so I won't be constantly hit by these long load times that are rendering the game a lot, lot less fun than it used to be? I have another 60G available and would really like to use it to cut down on these loading pauses.

Textures are largely handled by VRAM, meaning the memory on your graphics card, not your system memory. The loading times you experience have to do with a number of things, but memory also has little effect on this.

If you're playing through the Steam client, try downloading and playing the game from the client here on the website. For whatever reason, after struggling with similar issues you're describing for months, my game is now completely smooth and consistently so.

I have no idea how or why, it makes no sense to me, but I'll take it.

This was the same for me.
After my 2nd year of PoE I downloaded the standalone client and haven't had any issues yet.
Also, loading time is usually linked to what you have as your storage unit, hdd or ssd.

Just changed to the standalone client. Looks better :).

I still use it with the --waitforpreload launch option.

Oh, absolutely, but ever since they started doing this texture streaming, I've also had pretty long loading times on the Steam client of POE. And that's while it's installed on an M.2 NVMe SSD (Samsung 970 Pro), it really shouldn't have any issues, but it does.

That is, until I simply used the standalone client and then every issue magically disappeared. Like snow under the sun. Same graphics settings, game settings and no launch options shenanigans. It just works.

????

Call it what you will, at this point, I'll take it.

I'm just super stabbing in the dark here, but maybe it's got something to do with the way Steam handles games being launched from their platform. Maybe the client is forced to "check up" on certain things on the side of Steam, because that's what it looks like it's doing. Like uh.. Lockstep on a bad connection. Harsh stuttering constantly, on every mob hit, every Ultimatum launch of Delirium mirror. Or, you know, maybe I just have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about. The last part is definitely true.

You know, I did that once for fun with Skyrim. Made a RAMdisk and installed Skyrim on it. Gives a new meaning to the words "quick loading". You didn't load back to a previous save, you instantly teleported there, Goku style.

Has a few "minor" practical issues, but eh, there is no price too high for performance, right?

Unfortunately, i'm already on standalone client. I would hope that POE could cache some of its textures in RAM (not VRAM) to avoid streaming them from disk to VRAM and incurring a disk hit.
