Can someone explain this logic to me

Please, explain to me the logic behind the fact that cold resistance doesn't help against cold.
So yeah I have 75 cold res, got the +5% maximum all res passive, got a saffell's frame... And purity up... That makes my cold res sitting at 89%, I thought that would be enough (I was tired of getting chilled and frozen) I popped a sapphire flask (99% cold resist, mind you!), and I still got frozen like crazy so I inquired on the internet about Freeze and Chilled. You know, I am a veteran Diablo II player so I figured that chance to get frozen, freeze duration and chilled duration depended on your cold resistance. As a D2 player I also understand that cold resist was a must on HC D2. Because, you know, it's called cold resistance. It might have something to do with COLD. But NO! Chance to get frozen depends on your HP! And it just so happens that I thought CI was an amazing build. Oh was I so wrong. Apart from spending my time Chilled and Frozen, it's crap. Don't tell me to get "cannot be frozen" items, because it doesn't help against Chilled, and spending my time Chilled isn't any good either when I have such high resistances. It's the system that's broken. Rename Hit Points to Hit-Points-And-Cold-Resistance-And-Stun-Resistance Points, while we're at it? You want people to get different builds than stacking up HP? Then change those broken mechanics. So yeah, please, explain to me the logic behind the fact that cold resistance doesn't help against cold. Thank you. Yup, status effects are a big drawback for CI. You can prevent stun, freeze, and shock completely via passives/gear, but you can always be ignited ( not a big deal ) and chilled ( sucks immensely ).
There are several passives that reduce chill length ( by witch ) and can give you a chance to avoid status effects ( between ranger and duelist ). You'll probably have to dodge/flask. You can also put something between you and the cold damage ( skelly totem, faster zombies, etc ). EDIT: By the way, I whole-heartedly agree that "Cannot be frozen" should affect chill as well, but that's just my opinion. Last edited by andybmcc#3970 on Apr 3, 2013, 2:15:52 PM

I'm not talking about balance here, it might be balanced as it is right now, drawbacks because of advantages and whatnot.
I'm talking about logic. How is that cold resistance doesn't help just one bit against getting frozen and chilled? It's cold resistance for christ's sake, what the hell? IGN: TimeForSpectralThrow / iLikeShockNova

" It does help. The chill duration is based off of the cold damage as a % of your HP. In the case of CI, it is what your HP would have been, if you didn't have CI. Cold resist will lower the damage, meaning that it reduces the chill duration. In your case, you probably have very low HP ( calculated without CI ). So that means that even with CI, HP is not a completely worthless stat. |

" just btw, there´s also a unique against that, found it yesterday: |

What I plan on doing for CI is relying heavily on potions. I won't need health potions but I can definitely use some mana potions, quicksilver potions and granite potions and one of the most useful stats to roll on a flask would be dispels frozen/chilled and immune to curses during flask effect (I forget the in-game names of these affixes).
So spend some time gearing up your flasks and if you manage to get a Surgeon's (I remembered this affix name!) flask and crit all the time then you can basically become immune to curses, chilled and frozen! Hope this helps buddy! |

" " It DOES help. Chance to get frozen isn't based on your HP, only the duration of the freeze, and it's not JUST based on your HP, it's based on the amount of cold damage you took from the attack/spell compared to your maximum HP. So cold resistance does help in reducing the duration that you are frozen, because it reduces the amount of cold damage you take. So.. I recommend you read over the mechanics thread, because whoever you are getting your game mechanics knowledge from is not explaining it right. Last edited by Axebane#6055 on Apr 3, 2013, 4:21:37 PM
