Game crashes into blackscreen (nvlddmkm + KERNELBASE.dll)

Hello everyone,

since Ritual my game randomly crashes and all my screens go black (my monitors get disconnected from my graphiccard). When they are reconnected my screen is still black and only the taskbar is visible. In this state I can't do anything besides a restart. This error only happens when I play PoE. No other game is crashing!

Some strange things I like to mention:
-crash mostly happens while listening to music
-when I replug one of my monitors after the crash happened everything goes back to normal but I immediatly crash again on launching Path of Exile.
-restarting the graphicdriver with Win+Ctrl+Shift+B does nothing

System:
CPU Ryzen 5900x
Graphics RTX 3090
RAM 32GB
SSD M2 Samsung evo 970

Eventlogs

Eventlog always shows two events:
-Display ID 4101 nvlddmkm crash
-Application Error ID 1000 Kernelbase errorcode 0xe0000001 caused by PathOfExile_x64Steam.exe

Sometimes there are two other events:
-Dwminit ID 0 Desktopmanager crash
-Application Hang ID 1002 DWM.exe crashed

DXDIAG

Gamesettings:
-windowed
-everything set to low, vsync disabled
-sound disabled except for lottfilter
-Vulcan but DirectX has the same issue

Things I already tried:
-reinstalled every driver (clean installs!)
-scf scannow + DISM (no errors at all)
-checked for hardware failures -> no errors found
-virus checks -> system is clean
-different ingame settings
-different nvidia control centre settings

Hi there, Atresia_Ani!

I have looked into the information you have provided and I have a few suggestions that may help. From your DxDiag, it looks like you have been receiving LiveKernelEvent 141 errors in your Windows Error Reporting log. This may indicate either a hardware issue, or possibly a driver corruption issue. If it is a driver corruption issue, the most likely culprit would be your graphics processor's driver. Could you please download and re-install the most up-to-date version of your driver here:

https://www.geforce.com/drivers

Alternatively, you can use the Windows 10 driver re-installation instructions at the bottom of the page here:

Hi Lisa_GGG,

thanks for the fast answer! After the last LiveKernelEvent 141 event I reinstalled my graphic driver with NVCleanInstall (fresh installation).
Furthermore I change the Power management to "Prefer Maximum performance" and switched the physics processor from "Auto" to "RTX 3090" in Nvidia control panel.
Between the last and penultimate crash were 8 days. Usually when the crash occurse there is another one shortly after.
I'm going to test these settings now. Hopefully my graphics card is not broken. The error only occured while actively playing PoE. No problems in other games like Cyberpunk.

Do you also have the strange blackscreen behavior and disconnection of your displays too? Because in all other cases the game just closes or they get a bluescreen.

I have very similar hardware as you and I have had several nvlddmkm crashes during the last weeks. I rolled back to an older nvidia driver 457.51 and system has been stable since. May be worth a try if you haven´t already.

After I got another crash today I reinstalled 457.51. This version I had installed while playing heist league and other games like cyberpunk and I never crashed. Thank you for your advice!
Hi there, Atresia_Ani! I'm glad to hear that you seem to have resolved the issue and I hope you continue to enjoy your travels throughout Wraeclast! If you experience any further issues, please let us know. :)
