When you leave the map and move on to the next, yes it will be lost forever.

Just think of it as Perandus but Cadiro takes your coins before you leave the area.

Too bad most of the rewards for the points are not worth the time to do the quests :(

Not exactly "leaving". They are tied to the instance. If you go to the next area and come back they will be still there, but if you force a new instance for that area, the new one will be zeroed.
