Why does Void Manipulation not support Essence Drain?

Currently, to my surprise, Void Manipulation doesn't work with Essence Drain. The few guides I read assume that it does, and 97% the Essence Drain builds at poe.ninja use it too.
If I hover over Void Manipulation it quite clearly shows it doesn't work with ED. The tooltip damage doesn't change either if i equip it. Am I the only one for who it doesn't work? Is this a bug or working as intended?

It does. The only reason I can think of why it wouldn't is if the sockets aren't linked.

When hovering over the support gem, it shows a list of compatible gems. ED isn't:

Never mind, I found out what was wrong, I already had another Void Manipulation *facepalm*

Wow I didn't even know that window existed. I thought it was a window bug, but it seems to work. Mine only shows an x if I already have Void Manipulation linked to ED.
Makes sense since another reason a support won't work is if you already have it.
