Hungry Loop Unset Ring
I recently acquired the Unique Hungry Loop Unset Ring. I studied it in the Wiki but still have a question: When the ring absorbs a maxed out gem, do you still have access to the skill, spell, etc. that the gem provides? And If the ring absorbs 4 maxed out gems, do you then have access to the powers of all four gems; thus creating one ring with four different skills, buffs, etc.? Just wondering......TerryBull TerryBull Last bumped on May 30, 2020, 8:21:05 AM

"You have it consume support gems to then support a socketed skill. So it's good to have a plan for what skill you want in there before you have it start consuming supports, because there are no takebacks on those. It can be useful for some minion builds or trigger-heavy builds that run short on sockets, and a few other things. Also, don't bother qualitying the supports you put in. It is lost when the gem is consumed. And you don't have to level the support in the ring the whole way. You can use whatever in there and have your support gems lvling in swap, then just shift them over to the ring when they're ready to hit 20. I have a pretty good sense of humor. I'm not German.

Exiles,
Okay, I think I understand.... the ring absorbs up to four support gems in preparation for a skill gem to finally be placed in the ring. The skill gem is then modified by the absorbed support gems the same as a suit of armour with 5 connected sockets; four filled with support gems and one with a skill gem. The difference being the ring is a more compact way of using a skill gem with 4 support gems and there are no qualities on the ring itself as there would be on a suit of armour. Is that the way it works??......TerryBull TerryBull Last edited by TerryBull#0935 on May 29, 2020, 9:51:26 AM

Yes, that is correct, it is a 5 link item.
One thing to note, the support gems have to level in the ring to be consumed, so you need them to be as close to level 20 as possible when you drop them in there. ~ Please separate the PoE1 and PoE2 forums.

" Aye, it works that way. It's a way tp have a 5 linked socket in one socket. The consumed support gems will all be lvl 20 and any quality in the socketed support gem will be lost. For many builds that are starved for sockets, like a Summoner, it's a ways of having and extra strong skill without giving up much needed sockets on other pieces. |

You can also change the socket colors as many times on the ring as needed.
Don't quality the supports, it won't matter it does not use quality, except for your final skill gem. I usually use the skill I intend to use in the ring, in the ring while the supports level offhand. When they are ready to go 20, just drop them in the ring and it eats them. You can get a lot of level 19 no quality supports that are 50-90% leveled for cheap on trade. One note for consoles, turn off auto level on support gem when it hits 19. Then put it in ring when it is ready to level and turn auto level back on. I have used it a few times for SRS totems and Skeleton totems, now with Vulkan, I may use it next league! I like 40-50 minions around me :) Start with what helps most, like if you are going multi totem, put the totem support in first, or the damage support, then add multi totems. make it usable as soon as possible. And don't put the wrong totem in! I can neither confirm nor deny if I have done this :) A SPELL totem drops minions. Good luck! I will wear your ghost and you will die twice, against me and for me. That is some cold blooded shit to say... Last edited by GrunkleBob#2230 on May 29, 2020, 11:21:21 AM

Fellow Exiles,
Great explanations! Thanks so much. Another question comes to mind: Can you have one support gem absorbed and put in the skill gem; remove the skill gem later to install the second support gem that that maxes out and is absorbed and then replace the skill gem in the ring with the 2 support gems absorbed? Then repeat for support gems 3 and 4? Or do you need to have all 4 support gems installed before installing the skill gem?....TerryBull TerryBull

Sure, if you just want to use your skill gem while waiting your other supports to level up you can socket it into The Hungry Loop for the time being.
Once a support skill gem is absorbed by the Hungry Loop, the support skill gem itself is destroyed (that's why you should not use quality gems) and a bonus "Socketed gems are supported with Lv [max_level] [skill_gem_consumed]" Bonus If you ever need those gems back, you have to sell The Hungry Loop itself. Selling an Hungry Loop will give you back all gems it "ate" before. You will lose the ring, of course As GunkleBob stated, the support skill gem must hit its maximum level while being socketed. Socketing a maximum level skill gem into The Hungry Loop won't consume it Some other details on how The Hungry Loop works: > Notice how I have never said "Reach level 20". That's because The Hungry Loop will "eat" a gem when it gets at its maximum level. In other words, it can also "eat" a Lv3 Enlighten/Empower/Enhance or a Lv6 Awakened Support Skill Gem, not just ordinary Lv20 Support Skill Gem > While it would be a very useful way to recycle gems from a corrupted Gemcutter's Strongbox, Corrupted support skill gems will NOT (or rather, no more since one of the latest patches) be consumed by The Hungry Loop. As GGG said, "Blame Atziri for that". |

Maxtrux,
Many thanks for the detailed answer to my question and especially for the info concerning the difference between "level 20" and "max level" pertaining to different types of support gems. Good to know....TerryBull TerryBull
