How does voidforge work with conversion spells?

Im wanting to play a Voidforge Charged Dash Inquisitor, if charged dash gem converts 50% phys to lightning, and voidforge deals no non-elemental damage, if i dont convert the remaining 50% physical damage to an element im doing 1/2 the damage i could? If thats the case and i convert the last 50% to lightning (giving me 100% phys to lightning) what would happen to the fire and cold portions of voidforge tooltip. If i happen to roll that part of the damage would my ability not do any?

No, elemental damage given as 300% of that unconverted portion of phys damage won't go anywhere. You'll only lose 50% of the pure phys part of the base damage, i.e. 12.5% of the "ideal" fully elemental hit. Salvaging some of it with something like a gloves craft (25% to lightning) is ok, but Phys to Lightning Support gem would probably be a waste of a socket, most generic damage supports are much stronger with this sword.

Whatever damage Voidforge produces as 300% of your base will stay there, it doesn't care what conversions happen to the base damage after that. Meaning every hit will have 100% of the physical base as lightning because of how you've converted it + 300% of that as extra of a random element. Only exception is Elemental Hit which can in fact forbid to deal certain types of ele damage.

I recommend you to read about damage conversions here - https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Damage_conversion
