Mapping without killing Kitava

I'm playing my second character this league and I have levelled it up to but not including killing Kitava.

I read that I can't do maps until I kill Kitava, but the map device is oin my hideout and the guy you talkl to and put the maps in the box with - he's there too and I can put maps in.

So I'm wondering why I should kill Kit and lose 30% resists (which I can't afford atm). I know there's a passive skill point at the end of it but if I can wait until resists are beter I'd rather do that.

Am I missing something? Can I really just go mapping without killing Kitava?

you cant actually go into the maps. you HAVE to kill kitava.
