Suggestion: Meta gem for buff skills
Hi, while I'm excited for the new skill gem system it seemed during the panel discussing it there was concern for the number of active skills a character could have with the new system. I thought about some of my characters and thought it could be a problem too and here's what I came up with as a potential solution.
When I was thinking about the problem it seemed like the system would only really cut down on a specific type of skill; ones that are self cast, apply a buff, and have a duration. These skills are also ones that you typically wouldn't support with more than one or two support gems. So my suggestion is to add a "Buff" tag to these skills and then let "Buff" skills be socketed in a meta gem for them. For candidates for the "Buff" tag I'm thinking about skills like Blood Rage, Offerings, Vaal Grace, Vaal Haste, guard skills, warcrys, Phase Run, and maybe Withering Step. To still allow high customization in support gems, I think a combination of the new hybrid sockets and socketing the "Buff" gems regardless of color, like on Dialla's Malefaction, could work. Then, the color of the socket the active skill gem is placed in will determine which color of supports will affect it, while the supports still need to match socket color. For example, say the meta gem has 2 red sockets and one green socket. In one red socket you could socket Blood Rage, in the other red socket increased duration, and Enhance in the green socket. Since blood rage is in a red socket, it will be affected by increased duration, but not Enhance. If you wanted Blood Rage to be affected by both, you could recolor the meta gem to have 1 red, 1 green, and 1 red/green hybrid socket and put Blood Rage in the hybrid socket. Or, you could put the Enhance in the red/green hybrid socket to support skills gems socketed in both red and green sockets. White sockets could also play a roll, where a "Buff" gem in a white socket is affected by all supports, and a support gem in a white socket affects all "Buff" gems. This is all to say that you could mix and match supports to multiple active skills gems through socket color on a single meta gem, which I think would alleviate the concern around too few active skill sockets, and provide a place to put some thought into socket color if you want to min-max a "Buff" meta gem setup where some active skills are supported by some supports, but not others.
