[3.8] 🔥 Selfcast Volatile Dead Necro | Fast | Tanky + Millions of DPS | All Bosses Down 🔥

Intro

Hey all! With the buffs to Necromancer this past league, corpse consuming spell casters have become extremely powerful. While there have been several Volatile Dead/Detonate Dead builds that utilize triggers, I found that a self cast version can be just as powerful.

I started this build with maybe 2 ex of currency and it carried me through the endgame, killing Guardians, Shaper and Uber Elder pretty easily.

Pros and Cons

Pros
- Great, quick map clear
- Great single target (Conservative estimate of 3.5m Shaper DPS)
- High mobility
- Safe bosser
- Decent eHP (~7.5k)
- Lots of mitigation
- High/max attack and spell block
- Well-rounded
- Fun, fast and active playstyle
- No required gear; cheap to start up and scales well with currency
- Amazing at Blight
Cons
- Playstyle can take getting used to
- Can be very expensive to min-max
- Cannot do Reflect Ele Damage map mod
- Chaos damage is very spooky

tl;dr Path of Building

Spoiler
My character with around ~15 ex of gear utilizing Kiloava Lethal Pride Timeless Jewel, Uber Elder cleared, ~3.5m Shaper DPS: https://pastebin.com/N4NJnU2Y

3.8 Minotaur

I killed Uber Elder with this build fairly easily, but didn't bother to capture video. The playstyle is very good for Uber Elder as you don't need to worry about aiming any abilities, and can just focus on the mechanics.

Core Mechanics

Spoiler
We desecrate to summon corpses and then cast Volatile Dead to consume them. The new Necromancer nodes give us an enormous amount of mana regen and cast speed making self-cast feel quite smooth. The result is enough cast speed to rival a Cast While Channeling build's casts per second without the opportunity costs.

We also gain a plethora of defenses; being able to hit maximum spell/attack block, utilizing the Lethal Pride timeless jewel for high mitigation, slowing enemies with Temporal Chains + Aspect of the Spider + Chill and various other sources of damage reduction. The build is beefy enough to tank hits from bosses and is a competent boss farmer.

Gear

Spoiler
There are no required uniques used in this build, so look for hybrid (Life + ES) rares with damage mods where you can find them. The timeless jewel is not necessary, but is a nice bump in survivability. IMPORTANT: Boot enchant makes mana problems go away entirely and is big QoL. You also want to have a Trigger Socketed Spells craft on your weapon to trigger your Wave of Conviction and Offering Skill.

Annoints
Spoiler
1. Heart of Flame (by far the best)
2. Searing Heat
3. Constitution
4. Overcharged
5. Arcane Swiftness

Gem Links

Spoiler
Volatile Dead

Desecrate

Triggers (Bone Offering if you don't have Kiloava Lethal Pride)

Auras

The rest of the links are up to you. I choose to run a Shield Charge + Fortify setup and Flame Dash. Other good options are a CWDT setup, Vaal Molten Shell, Steelskin or Vaal Righteous Fire.

Levelling and Bandits

Spoiler
Here is a PoB containg levelling and endgame trees: https://pastebin.com/dJzFaZXG

I would suggest levelling with Orb of Storms until Merciless Lab as you need the cast speed from Necromancer before you can start VDing. Try and level using Axiom's if possible. Once you grab Corpse Pact, you can make the full swap to VD.

For Ascendancy order, go Plaguebringer -> Corpse Pact -> Essence Glutton -> Mistress of Sacrifice. You'll need a Mana Flask until you pick up Essence Glutton.

Kill all Bandits.

High-to-max block variant

Spoiler
I believe that the PoB linked at the start of the post is the most balanced, but here is a max block variant that is excellent at bossing (~2.3m Shaper DPS):https://pastebin.com/5QbdENPV

Looks like a very nice build!

What order did you do the ascendencies? Essence Glutton first? Or Corpse Pact first?
Hi, was wondering if you can make a basic leveling tree for the build. I'm very interested in playing this build and was curious how you leveled it.

I opted for Plague Bringer -> Corpse Pact -> Glutton -> Mistress of Sacrifice as the cast speed makes levelling feel much better.

Hey, I've got a PoB with several levelling tree and other levelling details under the levelling tab.

Thanks. Just added faster casting and VD-ing already (just entered act 3).

Yeah, you could def start VDing pretty early on, I didn't test it myself, but with Faster Casting I imagine its not bad
