Why POE is online game?

People playing together only in instances created only for teams and especially created for them and for 99% of the time - players can not even see other players so... why POE is online type game without possibility to play "single player" - in the meaning - without internet connection?

Because that's the way the founders wanted it. Because reasons.
by keeping it online only, they can keep most of the game code away from the end user.

Remember d2? it had an offline version, where people edited items and made crazy stuff. That crazy stuff got into the ONLINE version of the game. Along with items getting duped.

The founders of POE come DIRECTLY from d2. they did NOT want a repeat of that. By keeping most of the game code 'hidden' serverside, poe has no (illegitimate) dupes and no exploited items. The downside is, you must be online to play.

MTXs
Their whole business relies on it. It like asking why gardeners work outside.
because its fun to trade with hoomans.

if you're SSF that's another story but that's your own questionable choice ;)

Why would anyone buy anything from the shops if the game was offline.

It's because of their F2P business model.
The most lucrative and non-stop income generating model there is.
Free-to-Play with micro-transaction.

And IMHO they have one of the best implementation of this money printing machine. Just right and not overly exploitative. GG GGG.

I'm assuming there will be an offline single player version evenually. Once the next gen consoles are out and they drop support for the current ones I doubt they're just gonna leave the game unplayable.

They might, but it would be so easy to just set it to a permanent SSF Standard league.
Need a new signature, cuz name change. I dunno though. I guess this seems fine. Yeah, this is good.

There will never be an offline version of this game
