Melee range and lightning strike interaction?

With the new melee haul for 3.7 Legion. I wanted to try out lightning strike because of its interesting both melee and projectile attack. However, I do not understand if melee range in the passive tree even effects lightning strike in general. Does melee range effect the projectile's distance or is it only an interaction with the melee hit only? I searched through the internet and there was not a definite answer on melee range and lightning strike. Can someone please tell me what melee range effects towards lightning strike, if it even does? If it does effect lighting strike can you explain what it is supposed to look like?

Melee range will affect the reach of the hit. For skills such as lightning strike or Frost Blades, it only affects the initial hit, not the following projectiles. That means that you can hit enemies farther away with your primary hit, or that simply put, the projectiles are created farther away from you.
For builds with very low reach, like unarmed or claws, it makes a huge difference for most skill choices.
I've never played Lightning Strike, but it creates projectiles when you hit ground also right? If so, I'd guess melee range isn't very useful.
