Favourite character class and why?

Hi all,

I'm new to the game and debating which class to make my first character. I've played Diablo II for years, where my favourite classes were barb and necro. I'm not sure what to play in PoE.

I was just wondering what the general opinion of the community is about the different classes, and what are the most versatile classes or the most interesting builds for new players?

Shadows, because they have pants.

On a serious note, every class is versatile due to the way the passive skill tree is set up. If you want to focus on a dex kinda build, shadow, ranger, and duelist are all viable options. For int, witch, templar and shadow are all good.

As a new player, you may want to go with Marauder, as they have great early access to survivability passives.

Marauder would give you access to some beefy survivability early on, and you could play him like a D2 barbarian.

Witch seems to be the go-to summoner with early access to a lot of good summoning passives.

Build choices are very open here, the only thing your starting class dictates is where you start on the tree, and some starting stats ( which become negligible about 5 levels into the game ).

Eventually though, i hope they add Longcoats for Dex-armors

Okay so far I'm thinking Marauder for barbarian-style action or Duellist for pirate-style action...

Shadow comes out with some pretty funny lines throughout the game, that's why it's my favourite class! =P

My favorite class is the Shadow. Not only does he have the best lines in the game, I love using claws with him. Fire Trap is also cool.

Is shadow not quite difficult to play due to fragility? Just going off what I've read on the forum.

If you build him fragile the yes. Luckily this game gives you a shitload of choices. Usual shadow builds consist of the dangerous but fun dw melee, caster with or without CI, elemental bow or LS spammer.

Thinking I'm just going to try levelling a few different classes to start with, and then see which I like best.
