Smite - Question about support gems

I have been playing with Smite and have a few questions about the interaction it has with support gems. I found out that the new Shockwave support triggers on the melee part of the attack but not on the "area" damage from the lightning strike and that raised a lot of questions. Does that mean that the area and the strike are affected by different support gems? Does Melee physical damage affect the area damage? Does Pulverise affect the melee strike damage?

Shockwave supports any melee attack, it works with cyclone just fine, why is then that it does not work with the area damage from smite? is it still "melee"? At least for what i tested, i could not see the faint red circle triggering from the lighting strikes.

I fear it may work as Frost blades where the "projectile" and the "strike" are different parts of the attack.

If you hover over support gem it will show you if it support smite. It will glow both support and smite skill.
I know wich gems support the Smite skill what i dont know is how support gems interact with the diferent parts of the skill. For example, i just tested Fortify support. It gives me fortify when i hit with the melee hit but not when i hit only with the area damage. Is easy to test with some supports but not with all. How does Melee physical damage works? does it increase the damage of both the strike and the area? only the strike? and what about melee damage from the passive tree? Does fortify not count the "area" part as "melee" or just ignores it completly?

Smite is one of the few melee skill with both melee and "non-melee" parts. It does a melee attack with your weapon, and an area attack which is NOT melee.

So as you can see, the first strike with your weapon will very much trigger shockwave, cause it's a melee skill. But the area damage is not melee, therefore not triggering shockwave.

Another example is Lightning strike, which consists a melee strike with weapon, and additional projectile attack.

As a reminder, though secondary attack with these skill is not considered melee, they do benefit from "Increased attack damage with one/two-handed weapons".

If I am wrong please state a correction.
Yeah that's like what i thought was going on. I guess i will run with that then rule "Melee physical damage" out as a support, as well as make some changes at my planned passive tree.

Even so I would like to see if someone else has something more to say, or some confirmation.

Also, someone should add something about this on the wiki, or to Path of Building. Is late for me but tomorrow i will check if i can comunicate with someone about that.
