Addiction and PoE / Video Games
The term "addiction" gets thrown around a lot with games like PoE. I'm curious how many people feel like they are actually addicted to this game? A physical or psychological dependency on playing this game.
I'm sure some people are, but I'd hazard that the majority just have bad personal habits that are easily blamed on "addiction". I've played this game quite a bit over the years. 3 weeks ago (maybe 4 now?), I learned xcom 2 had the long war 2 mod for it. Installed, played one mission, and I haven't logged into path since. I'll log in again eventually, but I don't feel this NEED to play it, or a loss of some kind when I am not. Is there anyone that does indeed believe they have an addiction to this game? Do you get withdrawal symptoms if you stop for a length of time? What advice would you give people to identify addictive character traits that would make them susceptible to the same thing? I'm genuinely curious. Last bumped on May 3, 2019, 4:35:47 AM

" For a long time, I often went to bed thinking of PoE builds, dreamt of PoE builds, then woke up and logged in to work on PoE builds. So...addiction or obsession I guess, but they both pretty much lead to the same places. I have a pretty good sense of humor. I'm not German.

As someone who has been gaming since I was a kid, no. Addiction might be a thing, but not "because gaming is addictive". It's got to do with personality traits of the individual.
I've never lost touch with reality and always remember that I'm "wasting" my time on a virtual world. It's just that, I enjoy it, so I accept that. It's not that I'm unable to stop gaming, I just don't want to. I'm perfectly capable of going on holiday for weeks and not miss gaming at all. But apart from that it's just up there on my fav list and that's why I choose to do it. Carry on my waypoint son, there'll be peace when maps are done. Lay your portal gem to rest, don't you die no more. 'Cause it's a bitter sweet symphony this league. Try to make maps meet, you're a slave to the meta, then you leave. " That's because you go to bed right after playing. If you were working 3 mins before bed, you'd think about that too. Doesn't mean you're a workahol-- wait... Okay bad example, here's another one: Can you sleep after a scary movie? That's the same principle. It gripped your attention, by either interest or fear and you'll think about it for a while after, before it wears off. If it's a good movie anyway. :P Carry on my waypoint son, there'll be peace when maps are done. Lay your portal gem to rest, don't you die no more. 'Cause it's a bitter sweet symphony this league. " I'm not english native, what you are describing here is a mix between addiction and beeing dependant wich translate into really different situations. Does english language differenciate both aswell ? Addict != dependance issues Hf :) Last edited by Heli0nix#0378 on May 3, 2019, 3:07:50 AM

" Nothing...and I mean nothing...has ever occupied my mind the way PoE did for quite a while. It never got to the point where it had a negative impact on my life (aside from some sleep disruption), but it truly was always on my mind. I'm really thankful that I have a very chill non-gamer wife who often keeps herself busy with her own interests and was very understanding of mine. Heh... I have a pretty good sense of humor. I'm not German.

I think that it is a tough question to answer for yourself. As people who are addicted do not tent to categorize themselves as such.
The question that should be asked is do video games interfere with or hinder other essential aspects of your life? An extreme case would be for example, people who drop out of collage because they played too much and did not study. or Kids who become violent and attack their parents because the parents threatened that they would take their console\computer away because they play too much. (you should read a book by Richard Freed called "wired Child"). a more "easier" cases can be to pass on a family or friends gatherings just to have more time to play. Obviously, along with a binary state of addicted or not, it is also a scale, to what degree are you addicted if you are. Things like those signal to what degree (and if you are) addicted to video games. Obviously one might say that passing on a visit to one's aunt (which can be boring) to play a video game is not a signifier for addiction. Other could argue that if you play with friends, it is not that different from a physical gathering. More so if the gathering itself involves playing games together on smart phones. So, it has a lot of Grey areas... I myself in my B.A found out that PoE did interfere with my studies and did my best to limit myself by imposing two things. Now I do not to take a mouse with me so I could not play even if I wanted to. Two, In my B.A I did not move my desktopto my new apartment and only used my old laptop to study, as it could not run PoE. However, if people around you remark that you play too much, you should try to reflect on that issue. | |
I didn't look up definitions. You can get addicted to playing slots right ?!
I think people can get addicted to anything they respond to emotionaly (dont crucify, i know big unsubstantiated claim). It isn't only the prospect of potentially getting a different outcome everytime you perform a action. Probably the visual and audio stimuli is as big a part of it. Poe is definitely not a addiction to me although having a high level hardcore character i can get somewhat obsessive. These days when i load up the client i mostly read world chat for abit to lower my iq and get a chuckle but have no ambitions beyond that really. When new leagues started i used to be really hyped, maybe its my age or the time spent playing poe, but these days i dont get that anymore. Still i would say videogame addiction is real. You have to remember to chase and catch your dreams, because if you don't, your imagination will live in empty spaces, and that's nowhere land.
