Leveling Friends, wasn't working?

Hey Guys,

So just got this game a little while ago, and it is amazing, way to go! A quick question that was bothering me.

So I am a level 31 witch at the moment, and my friends just started playing, and I rushed my one friend through to act 2, and she is only level 9. I thought she would level up more.

But anyways, I killed tons of enemies for her, for quite a while and she wouldn't level from level 9 up at all...it seemed awfully too long time to not level.

So, what is the reason for this, why wouldn't she level? At times I was far away from her, but in the same area, does this matter? One friend told me, he thinks it may be because we were too far apart, do you have to be close together to level up? Or is it because I am a higher level then her, and blocking it somehow??

I am quite confused, thank you for the help!

I think the experience gets lessened if there's a high level in the group to avoid this kind of thing, it forces your friend to do it herself or for you to create a new character and help them along.
2 things

Being way underleveled than the area (-5) yields less xp. And the level difference between you 2 also yields no xp for your friend. So no, don't rush people. It takes a relaxing day to finish normal, with coffee, lunch, breaks. No need to hurry.
Thanks guys, this clears so much up, and makes sense! I agree, I think it is better to enjoy the game on your own, then team up later, but she insisted she wanted to catch up to me. So we can get to cruel together.

So how would one play with friends in this game then? Do you all have to be the same level? I mean, what if I keep leveling up and she never catches up... Or would we both have to start new characters together and only play those characters together.....?

Thanks again!

I would suggest rerolling a new character with her, she'll level up in a party faster and then you can play your main when she has caught you up in level.
With the ability to have so many alts, i would make an alt for strictly leveling with her.

Since there is a mechanism that´s more anti towards PL friends

more informations here http://en.pathofexilewiki.com/wiki/Partying

I would suggest you just make equal leveled toons.
A few tip for faster leveling

-skip high hp mobs like golems
-skip single or duo mobs (except rares that you can snipe fast)
-only slow down to AOE down groups of mobs
-look out for blue mob, they give you 3x XP of a white mob
-don´t clear all of the map, getting to the next map, waypoint, boss, act is more desirable
-watch on your level and the level of the area you´re in. if it´s the same = good, is it lower =go on!
-there are areas where you can make safe a few levels where the mobs aren´t that hard (the ledge, fellshrine, the docks)
What can never be lent or earned?
Somewhat, that devours everyone and everything:
A tree that rush. A bird that sings. It eat bones and smite the hardest stones.
Masticate every sword. Shatters every shrine. It defeat mighty kings and carry mountains on lightly wings.
What am i?
Awesome, awesome, thank you guys!

You're only level 31, it shouldn't take her too long to catch up. I'd normally start a new character to play a bit with a friend, it's fun to try new builds and classes, and a much better experience for your friend. Leveling slows down as you get to higher levels, so "never being able to catch up" is pretty impossible unless you play a ton more than your friend. If for some reason you don't want to try a new character, but still really want to "help her out" with your higher-level character, just do it for quests (help killing bosses or grabbing waypoints) so she can get to a good farming area for the XP, and then she can group up with other people closer to her level for the leveing. You can also slow yourself down and still have fun playing on my your main if you hold off on progressing questwise while she catches up, and just item farm a bit lower level area (or, around her level area if you want to gear her out and speed her up!).

Interesting, thanks a lot! :)

And on a unrelated question, I just got a discharge gem, I am a witch...I put it in the gem slot, and it doesn't do anything, when I push lets say "R" how do I use this spell? Is there something fancy I have to do, cause it isn't working....Should just work the same as any other gem, shouldn't it....?
