Is being forgotten really a fate worse than death?

Something of a more melancholy, philosophical thread topic here. So the new league trailer starts -

"To be forgotten, a fate worse than death." - Cavas

It's not exactly a very original thought he's expressing, but is it really true (as a general rule) in the first place? If you were dying, would you wish the people in your life to always remember you (and thereby be reminded of your absence), or would you actually prefer it if they forgot you, moving on with their lives with no sense of loss?

There are some people who even seek death aka are suicidal - and not all of them hope to be remembered. In fact for some of them the thought of the pain it might cause their loved ones is one of the reasons they haven't done it yet. Whatever you may think of that reason for not committing suicide, fact is that being forgotten is exactly what they'd want.

And what of a life forgotten? How many people have wished to erase their old lives, for the opportunity to start anew? Indeed this is even becoming more common now thanks to the online records of our lives that follow us everywhere, including some histories we may wish everyone would forget. This has given rise recently to things such as the campaign for the online 'Right to be Forgotten' aka for the scrubbing of our online data trail from the internets' servers. But what of forgetting our entire lives traces? For some people with pasts they wish to desperately escape, that'd be a dream come true, even at the cost of the people they know.

In that case being forgotten is preferable not just post death, but even in life. And of course we all have at least some memories we wish we could forget. Such people exist, probably more common than you'd think (especially the depressed ones), so perhaps Cavas is wrong? Perhaps he should be thankful that he's forgotten and been forgotten. Our exiles have a history of intervening in Wraeclastian crises only to make matters worse. Perhaps the end result of our ministrations to Cavas' memories is not going to be his redemption and release, but despair and horror? Perhaps we are actually here to teach him that there really is a fate worse than forgetting - to remember.

All current life forms roughly equate to 4% of the total combined of life ever present on this planet.

I would have to check the numbers but if i remember correctly that's accurate.

Just to say, 96% got forgotten in the flow of time.

We don't see no "protect the mamoth" society's, but apparently it's terrible if panda's would go extinct and so many other creatures.
It all makes very little sense.

For example, every year 55 species go extinct currently.

By that same token, collecting insects in your own gaurden for a week would result in finding roughly 60 new mutations of insects unregistered by science.

People are very weird when it comes to "death" and since we project on animals it doesn't even stop with our own "death".

Peace,

Jokes aside, the question is a moot point. It's not a good thing to be forgotten because we are social animals and social animals like to form bonds. It's in our genes and there really isn't anything here to debate here.

Also, trying to compare the morality of mentally ill person, such as those that are depressed, is a pretty stupid argument. They are mentally ill. Their decisions are impaired.

It's like asking a girl rape victim if they think all guys are rapists. Or a mother whose kid got run over by a drunk driver if drinking is good.

You can't make societal or even general statements on society off someone whose obviously going to be in an emotional and otherwise warped frame of mind unless you want insane shit happening like half the population being castrated and you being sent to prison for sipping wine on your wedding day.

Yeah, not happening.

It's probably a side affect of his very early stages of Cavas' Alzheimer's disease. I'm sure it is super scary to think (today while you can) that in the future your ability to remember will become harder and harder and eventually fail. Not being able to recall anything is a worse fate than death.

Necessity may be the mother of invention, but poor QoP in PoE is the father of frustration.

When you finally realize that you replace almost every atom of your body every seven years or so, and your mind is changing as well as you learn new things and have new experiences, you really start to wonder if this "you" thing is as important as we make it.
Whats the point of all philosophy if its all ends by:

No time to explain!
Kill the monsters!
There is no such 'general rule', thus it's neither true or false.

To be forgotten means you didn't leave a mark on the world, thus leading a life of meaninglessness.

Well, saying that is for simplicity's sake and not entirely accurate; this being a gaming forum, a proper, lengthy analysis would be the so-called 'pearl for the pigs'.
Once I am dead, I have either moved onwards or ceased to exist.

While I hope I have left things right for the people I care about, I'll have no further interest in this current existence. People forgetting me becomes entirely irrelevant.
That line will probably make more sense once we understand the context of the character more and why he holds memories as a concept dear to him. If Izaro said something similar, you would immediately understand it would have been about success as an emperor and not literally everyone, for example. It's not about having an objective truth but rather communicating what the character's personal values and perspective are.
If I'm not alive I'm not going to care one way or another if anyone remembers or forgets me.

Sounds like something only someone alive would think about and they don't have the proper experience to make a solid decision (death).
