Running PoE off a flash drive?
|
Was just curious if anybody else has done this before. I will be traveling a lot for work in the near future, and will only have access to medium-low end spec computers, but still want to get on PoE for trading and things of that nature when given the down time.
Is it possible/feasible to run PoE off of a flash stick? It's been forever since I bought a flash drive, so I wasn't sure if the "quality" of the flash drive affects things, in terms of the read/write speed of the thumb drive itself (if that's even such a thing). Pretty sure Steam wont let you install to a thumb drive, so you'll have to go with the downloadable client.

I'd just buy a 1TB external hard drive instead of a flash drive

depending on your budget you could buy a cheap 250gb ssd or even a 250gb HDD if you need to go even cheaper

For the game/client (standalone, cant speak for steam) it makes no difference where the data is placed. Also, write speed is probably only important for updates (but it also uses the install path for some caching)
But: I doubt you will have much 'fun' out of a combination of a low-end computer with a usb-connected game drive... What I do: a sata-connected, removable SSD (slot case) works well... same I would expect with an external, eSATA drive (if eSATA is available). invited by timer @ 10.12.2011

I actually did. Before I got my new PC including SSD, I ran PoE from a "SanDisc Ultra Extreme" USB 3.0 64GB.
It reduced HDD activity, which otherwise was running non-stop and it eliminated the "loading lags" at the beginning of new areas, especially maps. With my slow HDD it often took 1 to 2 minutes until the game ran perfectly fluent. No way I could do a quick shaper run etc. So yes, it works, and it works fine compared to a HDD. You simply install the game as you´d usually do on your HDD, then copy the whole game folder onto your stick and create a shortcut of the poe.exe (from the stick) on your desktop. If that works with steam, I cannot say. I don´t use steam if I can avoid it. |

It is no cheap idea but it should work by cloud gaming. As far I know cost about 30Euro to play PoE in best and highest details even on a toaster or smartphone. All you need is a good internet connection, the cloud pc is a very strong and fast configuration. Maybe have a look at youtube and cloud gaming.

Use an SD card. You are then only limited by Your Usb port speeds....
Also setting A cache on the SD card to help with Memory works but once again You are limited by the speed of Your Usb Port. . . My friend Runs a Cheep Server setup off Linux using The SD for the operating system and Cheep HDD disks for storage on his mail and web servers he runs. . So yes it will work. You will probably even get better load speeds If you were using a normal HDD before hand instead of a SDD I am your Devine one Bow before me

Honestly dude just save yourself the trouble and security risk and just use a secure VNC connection back to your home PC.
Then you can just remote in from anywhere with the VNC client and play right off of your desktop with the power of your home PC. ;) |
