Unable to use corruption altar in Temple on skill gems

Getting "Failed to apply item: Item cannot be corrupted." when I try to use the corruption altar on regular gems. Tried on both the 20/20 blade vortex in my inventory as well as the L2 Enhance. Edit: Since I couldn't use it on my skill gems I tried it on a random jewel in my inventory and it did corrupt it. You can only corrupt gems in temple through the Gemcutter rooms... this one is for other items.
