Game Crashing and Closing (Windows 10/NVIDIA Fixes)

I'm just going to throw this together really fast for anyone who has been having issues with their game crashing with errors and/or without errors. I spent about 2 weeks hunting forums for fixes and I almost always saw the same "solutions" that didn't work for me. My game was progressively crashing and closing more and more and it was to the point that it was nearly unplayable. I couldn't finish dailies, labyrinths, or maps. I am not having any issues now that I made a few changes, and hopefully 1 or all of these things can help someone else who is about to rage quit. I will list a number of possible solutions and a brief explanation, if necessary.

CRASHING WITH ERRORS
- Disable Microtransaction Effects (They can cause crashing when zoning.)

- Disable VSync (This option tries to match the game's FPS output with your monitor's FPS capability known as Hz. 60hz monitor would have 60fps.)

- Disable Multiple Displays (If you're running a PC with multiple displays, it has been known to cause freezing, crashing, and graphical glitches, especially with fullscreen.)

- Set Mode to Fullscreen (I, personally, use Windowed Fullscreen without issue. However, using Fullscreen without using any background applications or windows has fixed crashes for some players.

- Disable Multithreading (I use this option to speed up the game, but it has been known to cause crashes for others. It allows multiple cores of your processor to be used rather than just 1.

- Enable Dynamic Resolution (Makes the game fuzzy when a lot is happening on the screen in order to compensate for lag.)

- Disable Screen Shake

CLOSING WITHOUT ERRORS (Mostly SOUND Related)
- Set Channel Count to Low (The higher this setting is, the more sounds will be played at once. If you're running your sound through your HDMI port it helps tremendously.)

- Disable Reverb

For this last little piece, I need to clarify that the sounds in this game can and absolutely WILL crash and close your client. So please, don't dismiss this. Some of this helps with crashes in other games as well.

First, it depends on if you are running your sound through speakers attached to your PC or if you're using your monitor to play your sound via HDMI or a similar cable.

If you have NVIDIA, like I do, you probably have multiple sound drivers. You only need to utilize one of them unless you have a fancy setup or want sound from both speakers and monitor. With that being said, this will almost certainly be the solution for games closing without errors.

First, open your Control Panel and go into your Device Manager. From there, expand Sound, video and game controllers. You will probably see multiple sound devices and/or drivers. You only need to have 1 of them active. There is a HUGE conflict between NVIDIA drivers and Realtek drivers when they are being used at the same time. If you are playing your sound through your monitor then you will want to right click and DISABLE your Realtek High Definition Audio. And on the other hand, if you are playing your sound through the speaker jacks in your PC, then you will right click and DISABLE your NVIDIA High Definition Audio. Sometimes you will see another option for NVIDIA called NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (Wave Extensible)(WDM). Unless you're streaming, you do not need this and can disable it as well.

I would like to say that I checked all of my hardware and had no issues, and I made sure to update all of my drivers and was still having problems until I started focusing on my sound setup.

One last thing to note is that if you don't care to play PoE with sound enabled and want to prevent the game from loading any sounds at all, you can set a command in your launch options as --nosound or -ns and the client will not load any sounds at all. Item filter sounds play a role in the lag and crashing too, so using this option can be a last ditch effort to sort out any sound issues you might be having. It also increases overall FPS and load times when the game doesn't have to load sound.

Anyway, I hope this helps at least 1 person out there. Chances are I won't be keeping a check on this post. I just wanted to put something out there that might help someone else.

Good luck!
