What does it take to maintain stable 144 fps??? (solved)

I just built a new pc thinking that it would play POE way better than my 9 year old pc. It does... barely. I just don't understand why my fps bounces from 220 (no vsync) to 30 fps depending on what is on screen. My old one did the exact same thing but wasn't able to hit 220 fps.

I've had to turn off nearly all of my MTX and spell effects to help keep decent fps. It just seems like there is absolutely no way to run poe with stable and constant fps above 100. The fps bounce around so dramatically that the fps monitor looks like a dying person's heart monitor. This machine is total overkill for poe and yet it simply can't maintain 144 fps to match my monitor's refresh rate.

Windows 10 64 bit
intel core i7 8700k
32 gb DDR 4 3200mhz ram
gtx 1060
1 tb ssd

I have scoured the internet trying every single suggestion on how to fix this and nothing works. So if there is anyone that can play poe and maintain 144 fps at ALL times, please share your build and configurations.

1060 GPU 6gb is a bit better than 970 card. Drops to 30 fps are "normal" and you will not get higher fps from this GPU than its shown on your picture.

For example Overlooked map is fps killer, where 100 fps is fairly average on 1080 gpu and drops are normal as well.

Imo only way how to rise your minimum fps is to load game into RAM disk - and its only tip and theory. Better graphics card will rise minimum fps by 15fps maybe more. I hope you have 3200 MHz RAM, otherwise your fps are crippled by another cca 10% and without fast memories there is no much help even with better GPU.

Btw if you can refund your PC I would do that and build another one. Your rig in my experience do not know what wants to be and is rather Jack of all trades more focused on work on desktop with many applications turned on at once thx to amount of RAM. As gaming rig its average for todays standards and is suited more to be working with 60Hz monitors due middle class GPU at best.

I intentionally bought a cheaper GPU as Poe is currently the only game I play and a 1060 should be Overkill for it. I built a PC that was ready for 4k gaming with only a GPU upgrade so that if I start playing anything else I will only need to get a better GPU. I didn't see any reason to spend a grand on a card just to play Poe. So aside from the GPU what exactly is average? i7 8700k is one of the best gaming CPUs available, 32g DDR 4 3200 ram is more than enough for anything today. I'm a bit confused why I should return this PC?

TLDR: PoE even with 1080ti still has fps "deeps", but you will be able to maintain 144 fps in some maps - deeps stays in every map though if RAM disk didnt work. Thats how it is with PoE. So if you play only PoE and you are going to upgrade GPU later (for 2080ti if 4k is goal), than there is no reason to change.

Longer Answer:

So question you made is what is needed to play on 144 Hz and from that base my response was given covering also other games than PoE.

Computer you mentioned has middle class GPU and due this component described PC is average gaming rig. Once you upgrade graphic card you will go top tier gaming PC and that PC will be able to play many games on 144 Hz.

Games like Witcher 3 youtube video, will have hard to time to be played on stable 120 fps in fights nevertheless.

For 4k gaming you will need 2080ti and those will be played on 60 Hz monitor. 1080 ti cards struggle to maintain 60 fps in games like all new Tomb Rider games and similar.

My suggestion to get refund and rebuild is also based on "What does it take to maintain stable 144 fps???" and in regards to have gaming PC.

For example

Procesor Intel Core i7-7700K
SSD Samsung 960 PRO 512 GB + WD Red 2TB
EVGA GeForce GTX 1080Ti SC2 Gaming ICX
Corsair CS850M
Water cooling NZXT Kraken x61
Cooler Master MasterCase Maker 5
G.Skill 16GB KIT DDR4 3200MHz CL16 RipjawsV
MSI Z270 Gaming M7

That PC is in budget range you mentioned and many games will be able to be played on 144 Hz, but I think you will have to drop water cooling. Probably you will be able to buy 8700 CPU than. The point is, that gaming PC is started to be build around GPU.

Another youtube Witcher 3 video where 7700 and 8700 cpu are compared. Nevertheless at first sight is clearly seen graphics is downgraded hard - no ambient occlusions for example - its crippling immersion and art visual is gone. Your rig video fps is almost halved in compare to high end GPU.

So your pc is Jack of all trades as its superb for office, for 3D rendering, video editing, streaming and overall it can be used on many different things with occasional PC gaming - if that PC was constructed in mind to be primary for gaming with given budget, than there are more fit solutions.

Grats on you machine, many would love to have something like that. Bazaar 1080ti card is around 500$, 1080 cca 440$.

I actually fixed the issue by overclocking. My fps meter no longer looks like a heart rate monitor. It is now sitting at a stable and level frame rate, at least while sitting in h/o. I am going to fire up some maps in a few mins to see if it can maintain these fps. I have even turned all my mtx back on! Just look at this perfectly straight line on fps meter!

So apparently either my ram or cpu was bottlenecking something.

edit: No clue where you are buying a gtx1080ti for 500 but where I live they start at 850.

edit2: Just ran a couple maps with harbinger mod and sadly the fps spikes are still present however they are MUCH MUCH less and never drop below 60 fps even with an entire screen full of mobs AND mtxs on. So a huge improvement, but still unable to maintain 144 fps with this setup. Perhaps I should have opted for the t1 gpu.
