Item level 55 Two handed sword can only get 3 sockets
So I found a unique two-handed sword and I wanted to bump its socket number up to 6. But It just won't seem to go past 3 sockets. It's got an item level of 55 so it should be able to have more than 3 unless I'm wrong about Item level determining the maximum number of sockets an item can have.
Here's the item Last bumped on Aug 27, 2018, 9:39:16 AM

What's your definition of "wont seem to go past?" You used 5 jewellers? 50 jewellers? 500 jewellers? Most likely you were just unlucky.

There used to be some horror stories about people spending 70+ fusings to 4-link their boots back in the days. Reading this leads me to believe those stories were true.
I also think it's bad luck GlintLock. By the way you forgot to use your blacksmith's whetstones. Last edited by kompaniet#2874 on Aug 26, 2018, 2:35:02 PM

There will be a message once the maximum sockets have been reached.
If it's really ilv 55, then it can get 6 sockets. |

It's worth noting that raising the quality of the item increases the chance of getting more sockets and links. Even if you don't plan on hitting things with it, it might be worth using a few whetstones on the sword to make socketing/linking it easier.

Even without quality, four sockets should be common enough. Looking at my crafting logs I seem to get a 5S result on a max quality item every 20-30 jewelers on average. I haven't even counted 4S results because they're so common. I find it hard to believe the OP gave up before getting a 4S at least.
