Avatar of fire interaction with DotS (Bleed and poison)

Hello,

Recently I got a dumb idea for a build utilizing Vulconus dagger as a main hand weapon. However, I am unsure about the precise interaction and need more information before I actualy start trying to make it work in practice somehow.

While avatar of fire is not active you deal physical damage with the dagger, meaning you can apply bleeding (and poison) to your enemies. However, Avatar of fire keystone states "Deal no non-fire damage."

Does that mean that onec the avatar of fire kicks in the bleeding caused by the attacks deals no damage whatsoever because bleed deals physical damage which is a non-fire damage type?

And additionaly, does the same apply for poison (it deals zero damage while avatar of fire is active)? Be it poison applied by physical damage or poison from fire damage using Volkuur's guidance?

Right. Bleed and poison will deal no damage as they aren't fire damage and DoT can't be converted.
Have you done something awesome with Sire of Shards? PM me and tell me all about it!
Since Vulconus will repeatedly toggle Avatar of Fire on and off for you, there is another subtle interaction going on: the damage of an active DoT can not be modified by changes in the attacker's stats while the DoT is already running (*). Thus if you do not have AoF, you make an enemy Bleed, and then gain AoF while the enemy is still Bleeding, the Bleeding will continue to deal its full damage until it ends normally.

Conversely, while you have AoF active, you will never inflict Bleeding or Poison in the first place at all, since ailments that would have zero effect are not applied. But if you were to Ignite an enemy, such that the converted non-Fire damage contributes to the damage of the Ignite, when you lose AoF the Ignite will still be dealing the full amount of damage despite you losing the conversion stats.

(*) Changes in the DoT target's defensive stats, however, will still modify the damage the target takes. So if you curse an already Ignited enemy with Flammability, that enemy will immediately start taking more damage from the Ignite.

I see. So Avatar of Fire only affects the damage of dots that are applied directly while the AoF is active and the damage of those DotS is set to zero because it is not a fire damage.

However it does not affect already running DotS applied before the AoF takes effect because onec the DoT is applied, changes of my characters stats no longer have an effect on the DoT.

I must say it makes an absolute sense and I haven't thought about that. I'm gonna try to test it out and see what the results are.

(except for Ignite or other sources of fire damage over time.)

Ok, I've tested the bleeding and poison applied before AoF. It realy continues to deal the damage even after the avatar of fire has activated.

I will test the interaction with Volkuur's aswell but I need to get the gloves first and right now most of the sellers are offline so I'll do it later. However concidering AoF interaction with vortex or cold snap (whose damage from DoT is eliminated) I doubt the poison will do anything.

EDIT:
As Abdiel_Kavash said, if the ailment deals no damage, it cannot be applied. Volkuur's guidance applies poison from my fire damage while the AoF is not active and this poison continues to deal damage even after the Avatar of Fire activates.

But while the AoF is active the damage of poisons applied while it is active drops to 0 as it is a non-fire damage type. Moreover, the poison can't even be applied in the first place while AoF is active as it would have no effect (unless I had realy horrible dice rolls while testing it).

EDIT 2:
I tried to use The Golden Rule jewel (the one which reflects poison and bleed you apply on you) to see what is gonna happen. As expected, while AoF is not active you casualy reflect all poisons and bleeds on yourself. When the AoF activates all ongoing poisons and bleeds applied before continue to deal damage to your character. However, because your poison applied in AoF no longer deals damage (has no effect), it cannot be applied and so you can't even reflect the poison on yourself.
