How to upgrade with Vial of the Ritual?

Hi
I had Vial of the Ritual for Dance of the Offered and it says to sacrifice it with Dance of the Offered to upgrade it. I finally get tier 3 sacrifice room and when I try to do as the vial says my Dance of the Offered just dissapear? Did you put the vial in the altar too?
