Does the order of linked socketed gems matter?

In other words, if I have a 6L armor, with 5 support gems and 1 active skill gem, can the linked support gems be placed in any order within the 6 link and still have the exact same affect on the active skill gem? Or does the effect on the active skill gem change slightly?

Order does not matter.
Order does not matter except in the case of spell totem.... I believe in that case it does?

"Order does not matter"

Great, thanks! I've always thought this too but then I saw someone essentially say otherwise.

for gems like "cast when.." or items with effects like this the order of active gems organises what gem is triggered first and what gem comes last. (right?)

Actually that's exactly what I've heard before. Just not sure on this. I play on Xbox and some skills seem to lag based on socket placement, but I'm guessing that's more due to some server issue or something. I have no actual data and it's not consistent.
99.9% of the time it does not matter, but there are some wierd fringe cases where it can. As has been mentioned, Triggered active gems trigger in the order they are socketed in the item. So for example, if you trigger desecrate and an offering, you want to have the desecrate go off first so that it makes corpses for the offering to consume. If you want to activate Phase run off a trigger gem, you want it to be the last gem to activate because otherwise the next gem to activate will pull you out of the stealth&speed buff.

Right.

For the vast majority of cases this is completely irrelevant, but there are a few tricky special cases where the order is quite important.

E.g. if you want to use CWDT1-Blood Rage7-Immortal Call3 as a trigger for Soul of Arakaali's 50% recovery bonus, it is important that Blood Rage is before Immortal Call in the link order to function smoothly.
