Dying for no apparent reason.

This has happened 2 days in a row now and I recall it happening other times too, as soon as I get to 10% exp at level 93 in harbinger soft core and its really starting to piss me off.

I have 6748 hp and I have somehow been 1 shot by monsters that are either already dead or do not exist. yesterday what happened was I was fighting a Kitava Herald and in this map the strongest one i had encountered previously did 50% of my life with 1 hit. I killed the Kitava herald, and then died instantly. He was not a reflect monster (I can't remember the exact mods) he did not have any nemesis mods, but he did make other monsters immune to death. I have no idea what killed me because I lured him away from the pack and killed him alone.

Today what happened is I killed 2 twinned rare monsters (twinned from prophecy) they had physical reflect (I use Doomfletch Prism so I am pretty much immune to phys reflect) the monsters died, and I was waiting for the Harbinger nearby to summon more monsters. As the harbinger was about to summon his adds, I popped The Wise Oak Bismuth Flask, Experimenter's Diamond Flask of Fending, and Dying Sun Ruby Flask putting my fire resistance up to 81%, along with keeping my other 2 resistances well over capped but stuck at 75%.

I play a raider who uses Avatar of the Veil, and Avatar of the Slaughter, I have successfully survived 1 hit from Shaper's gold Ball attack (I don't intentionally try to tank these obviously). I was at max 7/7 frenzy charges making me immune to all status ailments. The map mods on this abyss map that I just instant died in DO NOT have any damage modifiers. The mods on the map are 2 additional Rogue Exiles (who I killed in a different area of the map, and there was not a 3rd rogue in this area) Area Contains 3 extra strongboxes, Players have Elemental Equilibrium, Players are Cursed with Temporal Chains, Monsters have 50% increasec accuracy rating, Player Dodge Chance is Unlucky.

I would like a break down as to how I could have possibly died here since there was 0 monsters alive at the time, the monsters I previously killed DID NOT have Volatile Flameblood, or any other abilities that can hurt me from the grave.

Unless someone can give me a detailed reason as to how I died I would like to have my exp compensated. Last night when I was killed from the grave as soon as I hit 10% I managed to run around the map letting monsters attack me in seemingly dangerous packs, and nothing was able to kill me without me even fighting back. This entire abyss map nothing did any significant damage to me except for the Rogue Exile who used tornado shot, but with them attacking me unexpectedly they only managed to do about 40% of my life in damage before I could react.

So to test out to see if this pack of monsters could possibly kill me, I ran back, and I did not pop dying sun, so I was at 45% fire resistance. this pack from the harbinger could not successfully kill me in less then 4-5 seconds with me standing still and not attacking, with me having 45% fire resistance, I used a second portal and tried again, same story, this time I ran past the Voidbearers and allowed the Cinder Elemental's to attack me, with 3 of them attacking me none could spike me for more then 25% of my life with 1 hit. I let them kill me again anyways taking 4-5 seconds for the pack to kill me again.

I used another portal and killed them all in 1 hit.

I also tested to see how The Infernal King (King Kaom) did against me in this map.

with 45% fire resistance Kaom took 2 hits to kill me with his flame smash ability that leaves a channel of magma.

I have been playing since closed beta and I do die a lot. 95% of the time I die I can explain what happened. But over the past 2 days and many other times this league in the past week or so I have been dying as soon as I hit 10-11% exp with almost no explanation whatever. Most of the time its after the monster is dead.

as I was typing this up I recalled a separate time in The Maze of the Minotaur that did have a couple of damage mods on it. again I was up to about 10-11% and I just died to something unknown. It was a map with Bloodlines on it so I expected it may have been bleed but when I tested out 20 bleed stacks on me later on in the same map. I was not dying instantly but rather able to stay alive for a few seconds before having to pop my Staunching flask

with -60% chaos resistance, patches of desecrated ground and 27% monster damage modifier on a Pit of the Chimera map the Snakes still take 2 hits to kill me.

No complaints about deaths here that make complete sense.

Yesterday something similar happened to me:

Although my Vorici is level 8, I still run his daily missions for experience and loot (like free mid tier maps with a guaranteed rogue exile), but don't care for the mission objective. My level 97 deadeye with around 4,5 K hitpoints approached the exile's guardians and started to shoot ice shot supported by GMP. After like two seconds I was informed that my daily mission had failed because the rogue exile was killed. I have not seen him, he must have died offscreen from the arrows I fired at his guardians. Also his red mark on the map disappeared. I stopped shooting and dropped dead at full hitpoints and no monster visible on the screen. My death was not immediately the same moment as the rogue exile's, but like 1 second later.

Since it was a Vorici daily mission on softcore standard, it's simply impossible that any map mod influenced this and reflect is reworked now with a visible projectile and a sound alert, so this couldn't have been the reason either. It was a map like a cave or something, so indoor with less than perfect visibility about ground effects. I didn't notice any. I couldn't go back to investigate because my daily mission had failed and thus Vorici's portal was gone, and I resurrected in my hideout. That's also why I don't have a bug report number or a screenshot.

Similar to OP I was at 9% experience, probably reaching the 10% at the time of my death.

I've looked around the forum and all other reports of unexplained deaths are either very old or happened together with lags or disconnects. In my case there was nothing like that, everything before and after running smoothly. Perhaps a new rogue exile caused this problem?

Please do not bring up threads that are almost a year old. Make a new one, especially since this is most likely a different issue.

One thing that immediately comes to my mind as a possible cause is the Essence Drain exile. She HURTS LIKE A THOUSAND TRUCKS if she hits you a few times, and it's a sneaky degen with no sound or visual effect on your character. If you don't pay close attention to your life blob or your debuffs, you will be dead before you know it.

Oh ok...I brought it up extra just because on most forums it is considered polite to use the search function and comment on old threads, to keep topics together and reduce the chaotic myriad of threads...lol.

About the essence drain rogue exile (Ulysses Morvant?) - I'm not sure since I was that far away. Can he apply essence drain over more than one screen distance? As I said, I just shot at his guardians and must have killed him offscreen with my GMP and ice shot/herald of ice explosions. And I died really instantly, without noticing any loss of life. While I did not watch my character, I watched the left side of the screen where the guardians were so I probably would have noticed my life going down.

But yes, I agree that MAYBE it's not really a bug but a rogue exile design matter. Today my flashback character got killed immediately in spite of being quite overlevelled by Minara Anemina's statues summoned directly on my character. They one-shot me while my eyes were watching the monsters instead of my own character (typically for ranged classes). MAYBE this has happened too (considering the bad visibility in indoor locations!), but with lvl 97 (around 20 levels difference to lvl 8 Vorici missions), 23% chaos resistance, 4.527 HP and 12.917 evasion?

It's a bit of a dilemma. Obviously if there is another thread about the same problem on the front page or in the first few pages of the forum, post there for the same reasons you mentioned.

But people sometimes bring up threads from a very long time ago to add something only very tangentially related. This one isn't even the worst by far, I think I've seen someone necro a thread from 2015 to say "me too". There is a good chance that in the months or years since the last post (i.e. since when the developers have last looked at the thread) mechanics have changed and an issue is no longer relevant. Someone would look at the first post in the thread, not see the date, and dismiss the entire thread as an invalid bug report.

There is no hard threshold between when you should post in an existing thread and when to start a new one; all I can say is use your own judgement.

To answer your actual question, again, I can only speculate; don't take anything I say as "this is exactly what happened", it's just my best guess. A bit over 4,000 life is very low for an endgame character, and overleveling or evasion don't help you against spells. Ulysses (always thought he was a witch. Huh.) will easily kill you with low chaos resistances (and yes, his projectiles fly quite further than one screen). Wiki says Minara has Minion Instability, which is again not evadeable.

Exactly, and I thought: it's such a strange topic, better look if it had happened to anyone before at all - and also to proof it did I brought it up. Whatever, next time I'll just make a new thread.

All I really know about that incident is that something like that has never happened to me before in nearly two years of POE and that's what made me suspect a bug.

I know Ulysses and usually I have no problem with him, also during levelling in a new league with bad equipment. If it's no bug, I'd rather guess Minara since she surprised me in flashback race. Is she reworked or what? Or it's a new rogue exile I don't know yet? I noticed at least one new (Ohne Trix) in flashback, but that one is harmless. Perhaps there is a bug connected with new rogue exiles?

And yes, I know I am supposed to have 6-7 K HP. I just have no idea how to get that as a Ranger without sacrificing too much damage and crit chance, at least without mirrored items or something similar good.
Actually, I carefully avoided dangerous map mods all my way to level 97 with something between 3,1 and 3,8 K HP and just recently decided to change my auras for more HP!
I use the best uniques and a level 25 discipline aura (21/20 gem, Alpha's Howl, lvl 3 empower) and my 4,5 K HP is all I get - thank you, GGG, for nerfing discipline!). I know how vulnerable I am, but I can't really change it without giving up my favourite build type.

I was a lvl 48 Rogue in Diablo 1 (highest lvl was 50), a lvl 91 Frostmaiden in Diablo 2, both SSF, and now I'm either one-shooting mobs with my bought high-end-uniques or get one-shot by some bosses. I ran Über-Lab only a few times because I really hate the labyrinth in general, but those few times I never died. Why? because you can move around, Izaro is not extremely fast with his attacks, and they are well telegraphed and punctual - no overlapping AOE.
On the other hand, I just can't survive realiably even normal Atziri because of the overlapping AOE in the tiny boss arena. My build relies on manually avoiding attacks, and GGG kind of does everything to make that impossible.

Compared to Diablo 1 and 2, everything is now so fast and trashy; tiny boss arenas filled with overlapping AOE is just unfair to builds that are not meant to face-tank everything. What's GGG's point of allowing ranged characters in general, if GGG locks them in a tiny box together with the boss? In Diablo 2 you had the whole instance to fight any act boss except Duriel, and fights were timed in a way that gave you a fair chance to manually avoid damage.

But I'm totally going off topic now...
Perhaps it's a bug, perhaps it's not. I wanted to have it at least mentioned, probably it will happen again to another player, hopefully not. Anyways, thank you for your input!
