How is Maim stored on a target?

To explaim my question, a following scenario is given:

I am a gladiator with Gratuitous Violence(25% bleed), Blood in the eyes(25% bleed, 30% chance to maim vs bleeding targets). I use [some generic melee 1h skill for example] cyclone, not supported by any gems, and shield charge supported by maim support gem.

The idea behind this setup is that I maim a target with shield charge, and apply Increased physical damage taken to that target from the maim support gem [which normally lasts 4 seconds(?)]. Since I am a gladiator, my cyclone has a chance to maim bleeding targets because of Blood in the eyes; the maim from cyclon doesn't apply inc. phys. dmg taken to the targets [because it is not supported by maim support gem].

At this point the events can go in two different ways:

1. After the shield charge [without probability constraints] I maim the target and it takes increased phys dmg, then immediately after this my cyclone maims(from Blood in the eyes) the target and the old maim expires, making the target take regular damage instead of increased.

or

2. After the shield charge [without probability constraints] I maim the target and it takes increased phys dmg, then immediately after this my cyclone maims the target, but multiple maims can be stored on the target(similar to bleed) and the target further takes increased physical damage until the maim from shield charge expires.

This is a pure design question, but as you can see, it has great impact on the gameplay and potential build crafting and decision making.

Maim works in the same way as most other debuffs, in that multiple can technically be applied at the same time, but at any given time, only the most effective one is active.

In the specific case of Maim, this always has a set effect (30%), and I don't think any modifiers which would change this are currently available in-game, so the choice of which is active is arbitrary, since it can't matter.

The extra effect is added to the enemy for as long as that maim exists, regardless of whether it's active. This is the same as the extra effect on Freeze with Taryn's Shiver when multiple players freeze an enemy.
