No, you need to actually use the spell.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

oh, i didnt know this. The description is really misleading if you have to use the spell its should be the same wording like mastermind of discord which says "if you have used a skill recently".

From what it looks instruments of virtrue works the same way "if you have used a spell recently" but its worded "if you have cast a spell recently".

Yeah, it's the same thing, the skill just has to be a spell and you must cast it, placing a totem or throwing a trap won't work. Triggered and repeated spells don't count as a full cast action.

"If you used" and "If you cast" mean the same thing, except that the second can only apply to spells. Mastermind of Discord says used because it applies to all skills, where this says "cast" because it only applies to spells, and using spells is casting them.
I think the underlying confusion is caused the wording of the trigger gems, like 'cast when damage taken', which says that it "Casts Supported Spells..."

I guess it's not 'you' who is casting them - but then they count as coming from you, and use all your stats, so you can understand the confusion.
Face it, all of your suggestions are worse than this idea:

Well, it is 'you' but you aren't really casting them, it's some sort of a pseudo cast, akin to reflected damage being a pseudo hit. I like to think of it as free action or instant card mechanics from dnd and mtg, no mana spent and no cast time so it isn't really casting a spell.
