How much ES to make Aegis Aurora useful?

I'm wondering how much ES I need to make Aegis's recovery on block useful. I would assume that you need a least 1 or 2 other ES or hybrid items to make it worthwhile. Anyone have any practical firsthand knowledge to share?

I am running a max block gladiator right now, picking up life nodes that I skipped while leveling. (open to suggestions)

Not really sure what is the correct answer here, obviously you want as much as possible in order to lower the amount of damage going to your life.

That being said you should probably aim at least for (Armor / 50 * 3), so that you have a good enough buffer (Assuming your armor is around 15-20k that is).

I would say the amount of es should be at least 6% of ur armor and at least 700 (better 1k) es.

The answer in short is, no additional ES required, just a heap of armour. The Shield nodes you take will provide sufficient ES for survival.

Keep in mind your block will replenish 2% of your armour value to ES. So for every 10,000 Armour your block provides 200 ES. My guy's a little light on with armour at the moment, just 7,700 or about 18k with flask but the 440 ES is plenty. If you're exceeding that ratio the extra ES is wasted and chances are you're gimping your build a little to get there.

This isn't good advice at all, you want to minimize the chance of anything going through your ES or getting one shot which is the main negative point of block builds.

Possible scenario and why 6% of armor to ES is a good margin:
Life: 5k
Energy Shield: 1200
Armor: 20k

You take a big hit (3000 damage), your ES goes to 0 your life goes to 3200. Now since you on average block 3/4 hits the next 3 hits you take will on average be blocked refilling your ES back to 1200.

One of the issues with your build and aegis is your not scaling es hardly at all. So if you do slap on other ES gear your getting low returns on that investment.

Really you don't need tons of ES with aegis if all your using it for is a bit of extra mitigation vs fast attacks. Generally you would like to have at least as much ES as 2% of your armor but without knowing how much armor you have I can't tell you if it's worth it or not to scale more es.

A lot of this also depends on lots of other factors like if your doing reflect maps or running bloodrage then having extra ES isn't going to help much cause the reflect / bloodrage will remove it right away.

To be perfectly honest I think your skill tree looks like you would be better off with a higher defensive value shield and instead using counter attack skills like reckoning linked with life on hit gem. A lot of the times as melee the amount of damage you prevent with aegis isn't worth having a lower defense shield especially if you are scaling shield defense nodes. With that said I'v used aegis before on builds that don't really make the best use of it just to see the ES bouncing around for fun.

I appreciate the feedback. I was planning to try some frenzy based skill so I went up toward ranger starting area. If/when I get an aegis (not wearing currently just planning for the future) I would probably unspec from that area and pick up more life/armour/endurance chargers in the duelist and marauder area.

Potentially thinking aegis + carcass jack + vertex (?) with iron reflexes. I'm currently resist capped using BOR so resistances shouldn't be an issue.

At level 79 I have about 4k es and 3k life and have not had any difficulty at all in 74 maps. I plant to end up around 5k life and 5k es eventually. Armour is critical though of course so more es is only really useful with sufficient block chance and armor. I have 78/78 block and 6k armor atm.

@trav_dawg

No offense mate but linking a legacy aegis doesn't help the op because you need only half the armor value that new aegis needs.

For Aegis you want a high Armor saintly chainmail (or EV/ES if IR) with life and a good helm (AR/ES or EV/ES if IR). That coupled with aegis and preferably a ring or two with high flat ES should be enough ES (300~ from chest, 200~ from helm, 120~ from aegis, 40~ from ring is already at 660 base ES, factor in %es from int or tree and it shouldn't be hard to break 1k ES for start).

Don't forget a belt can also be a nice spot to find another 40~ es or so.

Linking legacy gear and saying it works does nothing to help the OP.

No offense to anyone, it's just fact.
