Trading PSA (Please educate yourself if new)
This is a fast, simple write up for the newer players on the etiquette, and protocol in trading. I will also list why things are done a certain way.
Buyer Rules -Use the Copy Paste Whisper system on Poe.trade if you are unsure how click this link: http://i.imgur.com/rjLKZ1l.png Some of you may think this is impersonal. Well it kind of is, and that's what's awesome it also lists what the item is, and in what tab for the price asked for. An added benefit to this method is that you don't look like an idiot for starting off the request with "Hi" then making me wait for 2 - 5 minutes while you type out what you want which never includes the tab where it's being held making me automatically hate you. TL;DR it's a major time saver for both parties. -Go to the sellers hideout. Why? I'm the one giving him the currency right so I'm doing the seller a favor right? Wrong. If you are in the process of shopping you are not mapping, running lab, inventory clearing, collecting flesh off a dead hooker, decorating your hideout to be as fengshui as possible, etc etc If you are shopping you are just doing that: shopping. Looking at stats finding the best deals, and you are not being pulled away from w/e you happen to be doing at the time which is what you are doing to the seller he/she/it is taking time out of her/his/its day to trade with you so the least you can do is go the damn hideout. -Found something, and getting ready to whisper? Get the currency ready first. Simple stuff. Make the trade go as fast as possible and everyone gets on with their day. -Want something really bad? Don't have the currency? Get enough currency then. Don't ask for handouts, and the moment you offer me half (sometimes less) of what I ask for an item, and give me the "That's all I got line" you get this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_charitable_foundations And the express train to the ignore list. -Haggling is possible, but don't be an idiot about it. If someone has an item up for a price you disagree with use the poe.trade whisper system, and once you've pasted add in after "-> Offering *Currency offer here*" if the seller finds that acceptable he will sell it. If not don't try to explain why it's not worth that much, and then call him an asshole for not selling it to you. If you are greeted by icy cold silence it was probably a bad offer. Seller Rules -Always try to respond even if you can't sell right then. It's common courtesy. The rule is expanded into a sub rule: If you don't think it's worth answering whispers for 1 alch/1 fuse items (as an example) then don't put up items that cheap. I admit I'm pretty bad at this rule myself. I hate explaining that I'm in HC (or vice versa), and I don't want to swap just to sell a 2-5c item. I apologize to anyone I ignored I haven't found the right words that won't make you feel slighted. -Know the proper currency conversions. This applies of course applies to Buyers as well, but this is mostly to avoid scamming yourself and to help new players to not get scammed. Don't take overpayment when it's offered unless the person knows they are doing it. If you need to scam noobs to make currency then I hope you drown in a septic tank. You can make more than enough Ex to get your builds working without being a scumbag. Random Etiquette -After a successful trade in Hardcore you should use: Stay safe. -In Softcore you can just use: T4t (Thanks for trade) Always use this message if you are the buyer. Seller optional, but it's a good idea to always be polite if your buyer is. Reciprocate. TL;DR Don't be an asshole, and use common sense. As a trade/chat noob, I have a question. Once you decide on a price and each party is in agreement, then what? Do you meet in town somewhere? Does seller invite them to a party? Does buyer initiate this? I guess I don't really understand the technical side of 'meeting up', where to meet up and then leaving the scene.

" More often than not the seller will invite the buyer to a party, and then the buyer will go to the seller's hideout in order to complete the transaction. In the early days of a league, everyone may not have a hideout created yet, so the seller will say "a1n" which means they want to meet in lioneye's watch in act 1 normal; after the first few days of a league are past this won't happen very often unless the seller is concerned with you stealing one of their map portals in their hideout. great work. thanks for putting your time in this
... QoL in trading has greatly improved, both in the game and in xyz tool. Fortunately the "Hi" sayers ale gone almost completely. I was so annoyed by some of these people, that I started ignoring them completely. So much wasted time.. "hi" guy: hi me: (nothing) "hi" guy: hi me: (nothing) "hi" guy: hi me: (stopping gameplay)hi, would you please say what you need right away? "hi" guy: is XY item still for sale? me: not sure mate, you know how the "Verified" button works? "hi" guy: how much is it? me: price is listed (alt + tabbing and checking for it - it is a 1c item) "hi" guy: offering 1 alch me: sorry, it costs 1 chaos, thats why it is listed for one chaos. I do not haggle on 1c items mate, even my shop thread says that in big red all caps "hi" guy: (nothing) me: do you want it then? "hi" guy: (nothing) me: (thinking: so you waste 5 mins of your/mine time to get item you need, but you cant afford paying 1c. how much currency you would get for 5 mins of farming?) encountered this many times.. hopefully past memories. this league 95% of the trades go very fast, just as I like.. looking forward to cross-instance trading IGN: Eric_Lindros

" If "hi, wtb (item) listed for (price) in (league)" isn't good enough for you then I don't need your items. I'm sure I'm not alone in that I use 2 computers when I play PoE. One for wiki/forums/poe.trade and the other to actually play on. So I couldn't do what you're asking to begin with. This isn't so much about etiquette, this is more about you wanting others to do your work for you. If you want to sell your items, you're going to have to put a bit of effort into it. There is a search in the stash for a reason. If you are going to hate me because of this, then so be it. :) Also, " Seriously? lmao If a 'ty' isn't enough you got issues. :P Just a lowly standard player. May RNGesus be with you. " I don't go to Blockbuster, request a movie, and tell them which shelf it's on. That's your problem. Know what you have and where it is. Problem? Go get a job at McDonalds, work for one day, and buy (premium) stash tabs. " Drown the noobs. I'll keep the scammers. One of them are actually useful. " You can also get to work without driving a car. The difference is 3 hours. " Fixed. If you're reading this, I'm probably on another year-long ban.
Thanks GGG. |

I have no idea why you guys hate on the OP. He put effort in writing a guide for the begginers, which in my opinion is very solid
he does not say anywhere this is the only way how to do it and you know what? this is not the real world where the seller is waiting for the customer and has to do everything for him. I have the item YOU want. Maybe it is the item with perfect stats for your build, or very good deal. And I dont care if I sell it to you or not. IGN: Eric_Lindros

" He calls it 'protocol in trading' which to me says 'do it only this way'. Also, I'm not hating but I do take issue with the wording. OP's way of doing things isn't the only correct way. These should be 'guidelines' if anything. " " So this means I have to tell you where you put something in your stash? If you want my currency you're going to find it or wait for someone to come along and tell you where you put it. It makes no difference to me. lol This subject has already been covered multiple times by many streamers. There are some great videos out there that doesn't want to force you to do things their way. Example: PoE Trading Etiquette - How to buy items! (Part 1/3) - Path of Exile PoE Trading Etiquette - How to sell items! (Part 2/3) - Path of Exile PoE Trading Etiquette - How to avoid scams! (Part 3/3) - Path of Exile I can appreciate the effort the OP went through. But I don't appreciate trying to force new players into doing things his way. Seriously though, hardcore players need to be told bye in a different way than standard players? lmfao! Just a lowly standard player. May RNGesus be with you.

the wording thingy seems like a nitpicking to me. when the streamer says how we should do it then it is fine?
and yes, it really helps me to trade faster (which is both sellers and buyers intention I guess?) if the automated message from poe.trade (and it costs one click + paste for the buyer) says what tab it is in. Your currency example is absurd, for your argument you choose the only case when it is useless IGN: Eric_Lindros CET: Timezone Last edited by Ludvator#6587 on Mar 29, 2016, 4:07:50 PM

Maybe it is nitpicking. But the fact remains, not everyone is capable of using the whisper generator thingy on poe.trade. Expecting new players to do it is wrong IMO.
A simple "hi, wtb (item) for (price) in (league)" should be more than sufficient to facilitate a fast trade. Is my example absurd? Or is it more absurd that you're going to not trade because someone didn't tell you what tab said item is in? And it's not that a 'streamer' said it that makes it fine. It's the way the 'rules' are presented. Just a lowly standard player. May RNGesus be with you.
