Alt + F4, not working anymore?

Hey guys, I was under the impression that Alt + F4 was the ultimate save your HC character button combo?

Apparently it kept my character online for 2 seconds after using it so I died to some labyrinth traps. So guys don't count on it saving you character from an untimely death. :(

Did you know it doesn't work anymore?

lol? it's never worked, the only time it "works" is if you luckily survive a couple seconds. Alt+f4 is a windows command, it closes the program, doesn't log you out.

HC players use a script

A macro, not a script. But just practice tapping esc and clicking log-out. Do it a couple of times, and just use that for those uncomfortable moments.

not true.

when you close the the client the normal way it disallocates it's windows ressources and stuff which takes time and then closes the network connection after unregistering your char on the respective ggg server.


if you use alt+f4, windows takes care of freeing the client's memory and device handles and closes the network connection. it's much faster.

both methods (and the script) fail if the server never receives the fin-paket (close conection) because of a network interruption.

this results in your character staying in the level for 6 more seconds after the last client packet arrival on the server before the server takes your char out.

the script which most players use is not just sending alt+f4 to the game client to close it.

it uses a external exe to send a fin-paket to the server using the client's network socket.

this has the advantage of a fast logout in case the client application hangs and doesn't close on alt+f4.

question is, if it is allowed. i don't think so as using the client's network connection is kind of tampering with the client's ressources.
