Savage Hit and Chaos Inoculation

The Berserker class image (clicketyclick) says that a Savage Hit is a hit that removes 20% of maximum life.

The question arises, how does this interact with Chaos Inoculation, that reduces maximum life to 1?

Presumably either:

1) It never triggers with CI.

2) It behaves like Stun, and compares the hit against what the maximum life would have been without CI.

3) It triggers off losing 20% of maximum energy shield.

Here's hoping that you have chosen to go with option #3, as it is the one most open to build variety (especially considering that you've chosen to make it part of the Scion's baby-berserker ascendancy). If you haven't, I'd urge you to do so.

If any sort of in-world rationale is needed, then we already know that the one shielded by the energy shield can feel the blows that hit it, since they are capable of stunning the shielded person; hence it would only be reasonable* that the person can also feel and react to a particularly savage hit.

* for a given value of reasonable.

Specifically says life.
Assume option (1).
None of the above.

You can take a Savage Hit with CI, it will happen whenever a hit removes 20% or more of your life. Since your life is 1, and hit that removes any of your life will remove 100% of it, which is greater than 20%, and thus a Savage Hit.

Making use of the bonus while dead is left as an exercise for the reader.
Cast on Death build confirmed.

Too bad, kinda sad that this mechanics is limited in that respect.

I thank you for that helpful and enlightening answer, which confirms my belief that GGG's unofficial motto is: "Why settle for the lesser evil?"

Just like CI Pain Attunement (and other low-life bonuses), then. :)
