Fishing troll is a bad community idea.

I have understood from the get go that fishing is not in the game and that it is (as of now) an entertaining thing for experienced players to troll new players with.
That being said, I know of a couple people who feel that since the entire community trolls them on this topic, that it must reflect the entirety of the community of players... which is not (entirely) an accurate representation of the community.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy the antics of the you-tube videos cutting off at the end, and seeing some of the confusion that results, but is it actually hurting the growth of the community, and is that worth it?

The only reason that I bring this up is because I have personally experienced 2 people quit the game because after seeing the troll posts from the game devs said, "If the game devs troll the community, why would I want to support them?" and "It is one thing to troll when it is an obvious antic like on an April fools day, but to do it just to get one over on the players reflects a group of people who would probably not hesitate to make behind the scenes 'troll-justments' just for their own amusement or experiment."

I just looked and them and said, "I guess PoE is not for everyone." and moved on. But now I am reflecting back and thinking that those were potential players for the game, and potential income for the company, and I find myself wondering if the 'harmless trolling' about the fishing is actually a positive thing for the community. Given my recent experience, I would have to say that it is not.

Just my thoughts, what are yours?

I like it. A lot of smaller, indie companies are introducing things like those in their games. I think it's part of the company looking more "human" and accessible instead of a big corporation who has to play by the rules and can't say or do anything.
I don't mind it so much in most games (for example, anyone who knows Trendy Entertainment, their patch notes are hilarious) and even in PoE it's not overly done and isn't in your face all the time.
Only thing annoying me is I've never found the white rhoa or a fishing rod in all the time I've played (and this includes killing well over a dozen tormented fishermans in the 1 month).

Example TE patch notes

Become the Bag Master. You make the rules now.

•Tell your bags to filter in certain types of loot automatically during Auto Collect. For example, tell a bag to filter in all Legendary loot. All Legendary loot that is Auto-Collected from the ground will automatically go into that bag. That’s right, Champ. You’re the boss. The Bag Boss. That’s higher than Bag Master. You were promoted just by reading the patch notes.

It was a problem when munstamuch was claiming you needed an eternal and eternal a tricorn for you to get the rod.

Imo it was some kind of evil scam to make ppl spend eternals for no reason.

Yeah I agree with you there. It was just disheartening to see these 2 leave, but I suppose it could have been for several other reasons and this scenario just being the scapegoat.
I honestly cant imagine that this is actually turning away thousands of people or anything, probably not even a hundred tbh. I think I was just witness to an anomaly.

I'm sure it did annoy a few people, but if you're going to quit over this, in my mind, you would have quit shortly after anyways.
One of my good RL friends played PoE with me back in closed beta. He quit the game and to this day, still talks about it once in a while and how the game is bad and he doesn't understand how I'm still playing.
He says the game has terrible gear progression, that you don't find upgrades often enough and that your character feels weak. He was playing a Witch and using Raise Zombies, Freezing Pulse for single target and Firestorm for AoE.
Did I forget to mention he made it to an impressive level 21 before quitting and making all those claims? Not even going to comment on the terrible build/skills he was going for.

TLDR: people will always find a reason to not like something.
TLDR#2: I like to ramble
The original fishing thread was pretty funny. The joke has been completely mutilated by now though to the point of being incredibly obnoxious. For me at least.

Does it drive people away? It might. It might also make other people stick around. It's hard to say but either way it can't be helped at this point, duping newer players is a core part of PoE culture now so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah there have been a couple of those people in my experience, too.
I had two (different) friends who play D3 Hardcore (easycore more like) I talked them into playing this with me to check it out because I didn't have D3 at the time (this was about a year ago) Naturally they wanted to start out playing Hardcore. I tried to tell them that its not going to be very fun because they will probably die easily, and I had lots of leveling gear on standard, but no, because they play hardcore in d3 they wanted to play hardcore only.
Needless to say they both died before Merveil, one died at ledge and the other died shortly after Brutus. They said it was a slow game and they just couldn't get into it.

TLDR: It is hard to explain how beautiful the game is to new players (especially people who prefer a D3 type experience, aka close eyes kill everything even on hardcore.) This is one of the few games the actually requires a large investment up front, but has a MUCH larger payoff in the end.
TLDR#2: I like to ramble too ;)

Still sane exile?
I see it as a right of passage. If you've ever been sent on a snipe hunt by an older sibling you'd understand.

It's a harmless practical joke that builds community. First you may be tricked, but then, if you stick around, you get to play the trick on someone else or at least witness someone else go through it. Is it mean? Maybe a little, but good practical jokes should be a little mean. It filters out those incapable of taking a joke, unable to laugh at themselves.

And with that, I must be going. I have to bring back headlamp fluid and elbow grease for the captain of the red team.

Just a lowly standard player. May RNGesus be with you.
