screeching sound from PC, while playing (only) PoE
Hi,
I have this really "interesting" problem.. Whatever game i play, however GPU / CPU intensive doesnt matter my pc is fine, given i use ok details i have no lag, and no problems what so ever. i5 760 (4core) 5850 1GB 8GB of ram +128GB SSD (which i have PoE on) ~3TB of space (2 drives) But, here it gets interesting. Whenever i turn on PoE, my pc (case) starts producing this weird sound, its not very loud, but since i have my case on the table i can hear it well. The only thing i could have think of as a reason was a faulty fan on some of my hardware / or hdd going to hell.. So i stressed every part of HW, other games / test on GPU, CPU, while monitoring the fans, copied files form one HDD to another, tried all combinations, and yet i cant reproduce the sound.. Because it gets quite annoying, i can wear headphones, or have some music playing, but once again.. What the hell? edit: and yes i tried to turn off the sound / turn off the speakers. This is likely due to some VRM coils on your GPU, could be related to your PSU too.
I used to get this with one of my GPUs, it was most apparent in high framerate/non frame limited situations, try turning on vsync to lessen it. |

I was thinking of the PSU as well for some reason. Had a similar issue (strange sounds) years back. It was the PSU. Or the GPU thing flab posted about.

sounds reasonable i just find it fascinating, that only PoE produces this.. Yes, Vsync seems to change the frequency a bit, guess i am wearing headphones while playing PoE from now on.. :P
Will google for possible solutions :/ | |
Sounds like what you are describing could be coil whine, or coil noise coming from the GPU or the PSU.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coil_noise http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeahtqeTrGo example I don't believe there's any solutions to dampen them other than to replace components. :/ |

Since OP confirmed that framerate/vsync affects it, I have some additional suggestions.
This may seem counter-intuitive, but it's from experience with similar issues. Raise your details to as high as you (acceptably) can, straining your GPU more, causing framerate to drop. For whatever reason this helped lessen the noise for me, I consistently had whine in high framerate/low load situations and it was not noticeable otherwise. The other thing that helped in my case was lowering my GPU's voltage slightly (this may also require a slight underclock), but I wouldn't recommend this if you are not comfortable and/or experienced with this sort of thing. |
