They really should clarify what is and what is not a "Buff". It should be a key word, or at least have "BUFF" put in the mouseover for the activity icon.

Flasks used to be considered buffs, they even got buffed by Inner Force.
They were considered one of the contributors to why IF was so OpieOP.
They were changed to not be buffs, so IF wouldn't work with them, IF was nerfed and specific flask buff nodes were added around the tree.
Inner Force was later, of course, nuked in itself.

As far as I'm aware, any proper buff has a green border around the icon at the top of your screen.
Casually casual.

This is correct. Also, skills that grant buffs will explicitly use the term "buff", which will not be used for non-buffs.
There are 5 categories of temporary effects that can be placed on characters. They have no overlap:
Buffs - green border
Debuffs - red border
Flask Effects - gold border
Charges - silver border
Skill counters/markers (incinerate, reave, etc) - silver border, same as charges. There's been no need to distinguish the two thus far.

Thanks Mark, for taking the time out of your busy schedule to clarify parts of the game for us. This is just another example of why I think GGG is a company worth supporting.

Thanks Mark for answer and explanation. I think mantra of flames is a bit underpowered and needs some buff. Temp buff from flasks would be great i think.
