Rain of Splinters Broken?
So I got my hands on a rain of splinters.
Spoiler
Gave it some thought and figured it'd be a cool way to improve my flame totems. Yet, the result wasn't what I was hoping for, since it actually lowered my dps, rather than increasing it. For the purpose of easy math, let's say my dps with flame totem is 10000 (without rain of splinters). at lv 9-20 flame totem fires 3 projectiles so easy goes: (10000 / 3) = 3333~ damage per projectile. Now adding rain of splinters for two additional projectiles and a sacrifice of 33% damage, this would be: 3333 * 0,67 = 2233~ damage per projectile. And now, instead of 3 projectiles, it fires 5 instead, so in theory, this should be about: 2233 * 5 = 11166 dps for my flame totem, an increase of almost 12%, aye? My real dps is 6304, adding rain of splinters to this, this should be 7039 dps. It's not! it's 5950... Did I misunderstand some mechanic about this precious jewel? |

You seem to have misunderstood a couple of things about Flame Totem. Firstly, the tooltip DPS shown for Flame Totem is the damage of a single stream of fire. Secondly, mobs can only be hit by one stream at once. Thus, the tooltip DPS is Flame Totem's real DPS, and there is no way Rain of Splinters will do anything other than decrease that number because the only thing it does that affects the number is reduce your totem damage.

Verily, as with most multiprojectile setups, you're trading tooltip DPS for coverage, which usually results in better clear speed. If it doesn't, you shouldn't use multiprojectiles.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

Rain of splinter won't reduce your total damage by 33%.
To negate it you would just need to pick up 3 more damage passives, since it is added together with your passives. Imagine if you had the following scenario: 1000 base damage 400% increased damage No rain of splinter: 1000 * 5.0 = 5000 damage Rain of splinter (-33%): 1000 * (5.0 - 0.33) = 4670 damage A net loss of 6.6% damage, not 33%. Also as mentioned, the tooltip shows the dps you inflict with a single projectile from flame totem while no more than 1 projectile can hit the same target. Can't think that any game has shown total dps for multiple projectiles,it's generally always per projectile.

Okay, so I got the mechanics of this jewel wrong.
Thanks for all the answers! |
