4 GB of RAM - not good enough for PoE?
Hello,
Well, a few details: my laptop has 4 GB (only... I suppose). It is a Sandy Bridge machine, with a HD 2000 integrated "GPU" (I assume this has a role too in RAM consumption, given that system RAM is used). with Win 7 x64 Ultimate. It is well optimised, runs few stuff on boot. After boot is finished, I have 2.9 GB RAM left. I always start PoE as the only application. Close browsers, anything. PoE settings are all on lowest (20-40 fps, solo. I don't bother running multiplayer on the laptop). Problems start after I load a few areas, play through some maps... the PoE client will eat all the RAM, and start to use the HDD virtual memory (it puts there 3-4 GB as well...). Load times become huge, client will need a restart, and maybe sometimes crash, usually with "Unable to deserialise" errors. After I close the client, the laptop goes on "cleaning HDD" mode, getting rid of whatever PoE deposited in the virtual RAM etc. PoE basically pushes OS things out of the RAM, after I close PoE, I stand at 850 MB consumed, instead of the usual fresh boot 1.1 GB... I just want to add that I never had issues with 4 GB of RAM many other games... PS: I heard there are some "toggles" that might limit RAM usage? placeholder for creative sig Last edited by Undon3#5633 on Feb 12, 2013, 8:54:45 AM

You are using a laptop with a video card that has ZERO dedicated memory. Ofc this game runs shitty.
Directly from the POE FAQ (note bolded text): At the moment, you will need a Graphics Card with Pixel Shader 3.0 or higher, and a CPU that supports SSE2. At least 2GB of RAM is recommended, and older Integrated Graphics Cards will not run well. The item is yours when it is in your bag. Last edited by Ushela#2383 on Feb 12, 2013, 10:57:29 AM

" This is not about performance of the GPU. I don't expect it to run any better. I play on the laptop only when I don't have my desktop available, because it might be busy rendering stuff for my job and so on. This is simply about how much RAM and virtual memory the game eats, on lowest settings. The Medium textures should not occupy that much space. I have other games installed on the laptop (Mass Effect series, Dragon Age etc.) and they are happy with less than 2 GB. placeholder for creative sig

It may run other games to your satisfaction. GGG specifically states in the FAQ that imbedded cards will not run PoE well and that is exactly what you have. Im sure GGG can tell you the exact reason why.
The item is yours when it is in your bag.

" You're sorta missing the point. Integrated video cards share that 4gb of ram. Dedicated video cards have their own ram. Your problem is not how much ram you have, it is that your ram is being used by the video card. It is certainly possible that there are memory leaks but I guarantee that your video card is a huge part of your problem. Last edited by tubasteve#4499 on Feb 12, 2013, 3:10:57 PM

" Was about to post the same thing, it's understandable he doesn't understand shared memory though, I mean he is trying to game on a laptop :D /desktop master race Last edited by MrH#0517 on Feb 13, 2013, 11:20:32 AM

The GPU uses 500-600 MB of RAM from the system when PoE is running.
People, please understand this is not a performance issue and FPS, it is about RAM/Virtual memory on the HDD usage. Keep on mind I am running at lowest settings @720p. And the embedded GPU does just fine at these settings, allowing solo play with 20-40 FPS, sufficient enough until my desktop finishes its rendering chores. I can play games that are better looking and more detailed than PoE on their low-medium settings, and they do just fine with less than 2GB, they're not "pushing" the OS out of the RAM. This is just a topic to let the devs know about PoE behaviour on such systems. It's not complaining or anything. So you're missing the point trying to explain to me how much RAM my GPU has or something. I'm a computer geek for 25 years... make my living with computers... " Sigh... I was almost about to say something mean, but I'll keep to myself. placeholder for creative sig Last edited by Undon3#5633 on Feb 12, 2013, 3:33:17 PM

" I only run 4GB of RAM on my computer - granted it's G.Skill DDR3 that's clocked pretty high, but considering I don't do any sort of graphic design or CAD engineering I don't need more than 4 GB. I tend to leave my client on for days at a time - along with everything else I'm doing - Visual Studio, VM with database server, etc etc and it still continues to run the game flawlessly. Perhaps the leaks your suggesting ARE based around this game NOT being optimized for integrated graphics, like everyone has said before. It wasn't made to be used with integrated graphics, which means there's quite possibly a good amount of graphical errors, and furthermore errors in memory, with having to use virtual memory to run all the graphics. |
