Faster Casting vs. Penetration

Yeah,

I recognized that the most guys equip FC instead of Penetration, which seems strange to me, as I would always prefer a more Multi over a inc

but let's do some math

I took 3 cases of Tree * 3 kinds of Gear...

Check calculation
(can't copy formulas from Excel -.-)

it seems Penetration is providing more DPS, in most cases, even if assume that the enemy has 0 Resis and we just get a 1,35 Multi of a lvl20 Gem

Just for a Tree w/o Faster Casting + Gear w/o FC Mods it makes sense to equip FC-Gem, but just if you have a 20Q FC, which isn't realistic with such bad gear ;)
Yes, most players know penetration will give more dps. However, FC is also a comfort support, you can't interrupt actions in PoE so the game feels more responsive with higher casting or attack speed.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

well, the answer to most "what is better" questions is "depends on the build"

with skills/builds that deal single element damage I always prefer penetration

but faster casting has some other benefits than just the damage. better kiting or more crits per second (ie mobs get frozen sooner in average). And ofc, some people prefer tooltip dps over the real dps/clear speed

My fifth link, wich i usually get when i'm doing the low lvl maps, is allways penetration.
If you are only using one damage type, then penetration will always beat faster casting against enemies resistant to that type and in most cases against enemies that aren't as well.

But as the others note, the game feels more responsive the faster you cast, and there are other considerations such as afflicting status ailments, or charging up the spell for Incinerate or Flame Blast.

Finally, many builds supplement the damage done in the primary damage type by the use of heralds,
auras, or added chaos damage, which do damage on hit and frequently have different damage types, which means that this often quite significant extra damage does not scale with the penetration of your primary damage type at all, but does scale with cast speed.

Thus the choice of whether penetration or faster casting is better depends entirely on build and equipment.

can we get some template builds' main skills linked here so we can determine that.
I have a friend who plays every HC league with me, and he always makes the same strange build. 9,000 health marauder that uses Arc in a 3L... Usually a +2 scepter, and eventually a +3. When I first met him, he used Arc + Spell Echo + FC. I told him lightning pen would do more dps than FC even against 0 resist mobs, and he didn't believe me. So I did the math and proved it to him, and he now uses lightning pen.

Ofcourse it would be best to just use both of them, but when you can't, penetration is usually the better choice. The possible exceptions would be builds that do different damage types. I don't mean builds that just get a little extra damage from heralds, those are still better with penetration. The other Possible exceptions are skills that rely on cast speed for unique mechanics, 2 of which were already mentioned here, flameblast and incinerate.

Penetration does a bit more damage, however faster casting does give you similar damage capacity along with a faster casting animation should you need to be mobile, more crits per second, and more chances to stagger enemies that are approaching you, more chances to shock and given lightning's random damage nature, higher speed tends even it out a bit, while higher damage per cast such penetration gives does not. Major drawback other than slightly lower DPs is higher mana comsumption, however,

sry but that is just the case for Incinerate

Assuming you play a high CS-Build the gain of Faster Casting is lower, just check the Excel-File
a 20q-Gem just gives ~25% more, compared to a 35% of Penetration.

So for Flameblast (as prof-Build)
"Therefore, over the base duration the target will take 80% of the damage dealt by the original hit"
which means Penetration gives a even bigger bonus

So Incinerate, should be the build, which benefits the most from FC
as Heralds provide ~50% of the DPS
340 Dmg/Cast at Stage 3 lvl20 Inci + 61dmg (HoI) + 99dmg (HoT) + 66dmg (Added Chaos)
in that case 25% are ~ 140dmg, compared to 119dmg with Pen and worst case scenario

btw with an Inci lvl24 and Emp instead of Added Chaos, Pen would win again

@Mobility/Crit Guys: Can be a point, but is a matter of taste I would say, I prefer to hit hard and one shot
Doesn't penetration affect reflected damage as well? May be the reason for not running it in especially high damage builds, since oneshot on reflect is much more likely.
