I think that this was mostly a show of status as the owner would very rarely have had to do any real fighting himself and on the battlefield he would have been more likely to give the commands himself

It is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship though. However, I'm wondering if it is really that old. What appears to be cylindrical clasps below the ear would tell me it is not.

so you would question their ability to bend a piece of iron into a cylinder but not their ability to make the rest of the helmet with all those intricate details?
