help with hardcore survivability

So I had a tornado shot ranger level 48. I had found a great bow with 92% increased physical damage, could use Herald of Ash and Hatred at the same time, my clear speed was great. I had decent life(~1300 or so) for my level. The hunter master asked me to hunt some animals in a dark place. They were some crazy leaping frogs. I killed 2 packs of them with no problem. Then, on the third pack, about 8 of them or so jumped at me at once, and I couldn't see them before it was too late. I was in shock(not the status effect lol) for half a second, then I tried to move, they jumped again, and I died. My question is: what did I do wrong? Is there anything I can use to scout in this game? If I had seen those stupid frogs at the same time they did, I wouldn't have died. If they hadn't decided to jump all at once I wouldn't have died...I lost count of how many times I died in HC already. But this time I followed a neat tutorial about tornado shot builds, so I did "everything" right...

in my opinion, 1300 is lower than average you should have at normal Dominus

you know, frogs jump, chargers charge, and with such low life you get stunned from every hit.. and the rest of the story you know already:)

cwdt-ic works against this burst damage, but nothing saves you when playing glass cannon

Yeah, those Tora missions scale badly and can be tricky on low levels, leapers hit decently hard and there's some critter that uses some sort of chaos firestorm that's even worse.

There are skills you can use to scout ahead in areas like these, like a totem or even better, mirror arrow. Truth be told, if you want to live long in HC you will simply avoid dangerous stuff as much as possible, so in this instance you just didn't know how dangerous it was.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

Throw a decoy out there. Throw it out ahead when creeping. Throw it ahead before showing yourself around a corner. Traps can also help.

If you know there are jumpers or chargers you just need to creep slowly. Jumpers especially tend to all jump at once. Also, don't give either one a straight line of sight. Use corners and obstacles to your advantage.

IMO one of the most dangerous things in HC is complacency. You're doing just fine, killing fast, hardly taking damage. Then suddenly BAM, something hits hard and you're dead. You can't become complacent in HC. You have to always have your guard up.

Well I followed the tutorials on the subject...at my level that's how much I would have more or less.

I knew about the totem, but I stopped using it once I got my OP bow, I was clearing everything so fast that I didn't need a decoy, but in this case...I needed it for scouting...didn't know about the mirror arrow though. It was on the tornado shot tutorials but I think I would only get that much later.

Definitely I got complacent lol. Sudden death is what always kills me and my friends :p. We never die in a heated battle, we just drop dead all of a sudden lmao. And then we stop for 6 months or so and start over all again. Well the adventure is fun anyways. Too bad I lost 3 chaos to get GMP...

The frogs make a sound right before they leap. When you hear it just move....
It's free, quit complaining, and just play the game.
One of the most underrated skills when it comes to hardcore is the ability to nope out of situations. Especially master missions can be deadly sometimes. There is no shame in skipping a daily if it is potentially dangerous.
