New Player seeking advice for first time playthrough

Thanks for the look.
Any General advice for a First timer? What class or what builds are good starters to help me learn what am doing. Gl and Hf! So a Duck walks into a bar...

" I hope you have a thick skin [Removed by Support]. My tip to you would to go Templar or Witch for class and Flameblast or Arc for skill. Peace MareakTheBarbarian ps; Desync is a pain but learn to live with it.
Spoiler
Seriously, just bend over and pretend desync doesn't hurt that much.

Play something with AoE.
Make your character tankier than you think you'd want to. When you think you have too much life, pick up one more cluster. Play in a league (torment or Bloodlines). Don't stress about the first playthrough being hard. Plenty of time to stress after you learn the game. Friend one of my characters. Happy to give pointers. |

First off, you need to determine whether you want to play a range or melee char.
With the current state of the game, range/spellcasters definite have an edge over meLee chars. Then you need to do some research on the skills you want to focus on. That is based off your personal preference (a skill needs to be visually appealing to me, for example) Then head on to the class section to see if that skill is viable for the class you want to play (you need to have a general idea on which class is good for certain builds) There are plenty of guides on builds and classes and people that post them generally have a pro/con section. Technically you can level a character with any skill but of course some are better than others. You want to have a build where you don't have to rely on multiple gem setup for the build to shine. Same thing can be said about weapons, like wands with spell damage are a lot easier to find and upgrade compare to physical wands. As for skills, fire traps, lightning tendrils, split arrows, flame blast are fairly easy to use and upgrade. Other than that, you REALLY need to know how the game works and problems like lag or desync. Do some research on Monster affixes, some are easy to counter, some will be a pain in the button if you are not careful (such as physical/elemental reflect, fast enemies with multiple projectiles etc) And all that is barely scratching the surface. PoE is a very complex game. |

Hello Sammyinside,
For a first time play-through don't sweat it. Play what looks and sounds fun, pick passive skills which can help and see what things do. 1) Pick character class based on what you think sounds fun 2) Play character, pick up gems and currency 3) Level up till you have a hard time and get killed easily 4) Make new character based on what gems you have, and skills you have learned. Repeat I can just about promise your first character will be terrible, but you will learn what to do and what to avoid. Passive skill tree - Target life nodes, and work your way towards them picking up what is useful to your build as you go. You will get passive respec points as you level to fix any mistakes. Good Luck! "Don't Panic"

Use this to beat desync: http://www.autohotkey.com/
With this script: #IfWinActive Path of Exile *q::Send {Enter}/oos{Enter} Replace the q with any key you want to use. Pro tip: Dont ask on the forum for advice, just hop right in and enjoy, your first char wont be your only one let alone the last one. ;) Want some unique items for your new char, try races: http://www.pathofexile.com/seasons Want to try building a skill tree without the drawback of ruinign a char try the one online: http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-tree or the one that shows stat changes (3rd party website): https://poebuilder.com/ Now have fucking fun!!!^^ |

Play about seven characters up through the end of act I normal... just to get the feel of it all. Don't commit much thought to them... just goof off with whatever stuff you want. That will give you a basis to understand what people are talking about.
