item rarity level penalty

The wiki states there is a currency drop penalty but nothing about rarity penalty.

From a few runs, I'm convinced that there is some kind of rarity penalty which reduces the efficiency of farming low level areas for the good low level uniques.

Data from runs, no gear or skill change, (220iir, lvl 83):
8 uniques from 28 Cruel Dom runs (with mini-bosses at the top of scepter, not kills on the way up)
2 uniques from 14 Norm Dom runs (with mini-bosses at the top of scepter, not kills on the way up)

Poor sample sizes statistically, particularly for norm, but I was falling asleep doing norm dom and called it a night, visually less yellows were dropping too.


I bet there is a mechanic similar to currency level penalty at work, if we use that forumla:

Uniques    Runs      Rate    Mlvl    Clvl    Penalty
   8            28       28.6%   54      68      35.0%
   2            14       14.3%   36      68      80.0%

Penalty = 2.5%*(Clvl - (Alvl+2)) where max clvl is 68

If this formula is recycled for rarity then theoretically, 35% less uniques dropped from cruel runs and 80% less from norm runs. This looked like it affected rares too, it'd be interesting to document both to see if it's a similar reduction.

Anyone with better data, or more information on this subject?
Ive done pretty extensive farming of all the bosses, and as far as I can tell there isnt any penalty to item drops, only currency. Ive certainly had good days and bad in terms of drops while farming, but thats just the nature of the RNG.

... I always though it is the other way around.

Game treats you like being no higher than 68 for currency drops (so you iE can never get a penalty while farming merciless lunaris temple), but item drops get reduced the higher you are outlevelling the content.

Already acknowledged that the sample size was small and I will add to it, I was asking about others' experience/knowledge.

Small sample size statistics is not a joke irl so contribute to the topic or kthxbye.

The quantity of the drop looked the same, the rarity is what I was asking about.

See post above, this would seem to imply quantity was improved but says nothing about rarity. Also norm Dom was the one I was saying had poor drops, which this doesn't mention as improved.

You are comparing normal Dominus to cruel Dominus.

Cruel has a bonus while normal does not.

Cruel has "substantially increased" drops.

Normal does not have "substantially increased" drops.

Even if it is a quantity bonus, the expected outcome is the same.

There is no penalty to item rarity based on level.
