Ancestral Bond + Life Gain on Hit support gem

So I'm currently doing a Dual totem Build

I'm currently attempting to use Split Arrow+Chain+Life Gain on Hit to heal myself

It seems as though the Life Gain on hit is being completely nullified by the Ancestral Bond keystone though I should be able to heal via Life Gain On Hit since I am technically still hitting.

If anyone could inform me if this is an intentional function of the game or seems to be a bug I would love to know.
on-hit effects that do not require damage should work (I dont know about any exceptions atm, pls corret me if wrong)

You will get life. You wont do damage, but you still hit the enemy. Works with culling strike, too. Nice to get the last hit with IIR and IIQ, even if you use Ancestral Bond.
