I have to necro this because it's been some months now and still no one really knows. How many players do we have playing POE today?

You really didn't have to necro this, because you're not going to get a clear answer. Even if they enabled /online again, that wouldn't take into account multiboxing. I doubt even GGG know off-hand how many actual players they have on at any given time, but with a little digging it's possible to discern.
I gave a rather long answer to this query elsewhere but the crux of it is it really doesn't matter provided the game is being supported enough to keep running, still be free and still be developed. Oh, and that the devs can eat. That's important too. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.
