Best trigger gems for caster? Examples please

Can anyone suggest a good trigger gem set up for caster.
I've seen some players with nice ranger or melee setups but not sure what casters do.

I was looking at CastOnCritical but it doesn't seem to work with spells.
Then maybe cast on damage taken which might work although not sure how reliable as I try not to get damaged. I don't think I can use the others unless I'm missing something. Thanks

Other than cast on crit, trigger gems are here to support you not to be your main source of damage.

Cast on critical most certainly works for a caster. Just use Power Siphon, Spectral Throw, Cyclone, or Reave to activate your linked spells. Which skill you choose should reflect what other supports you might place on your spells (AoE/Increased area = Cyclone, AoE/Conc. = Reave, Ranged projectile/no chaining = Spectral Throw, Power Siphon is simply a good choice because of cull and power charges).

Edit: In the end, you're going to want to crit a lot to get your linked spell(s) off. You're going to either want to hit multiple times or multiple enemies with each strike.

But I guess that's the issue, it has to be activated with a physical attack and as caster, I will not crit with those attacks. I have 30% on freezey pulse and use traps so I don't think that can work for me. So I guess if that's the way it triggers, I'll get the CwDt and have molten shell with ice nova maybe. More defense probably not a bad idea.

After i learned that the support gems to the spells cast with cwdt gem can be maxed lvl, i made some setup which is kinda nice.

On my char i use atm, i actually have room for 3 cwdt gem, since i only use 1 attack, and i need to switch to use leap slam because i use claws for attack.

Atm i use cwdt as

1st gem setup.
lvl 1 cwdt with enduring cry + enfeeble + detonate dead.
Even if i don't get max endurance charges on first trigger usually, i get it on the second cast. with only 440 dmg to trigger, it doesnt take much. As for detonate dead, it deals 18% fire dmg based on the corpse, so it doesnt need to be lvled. it is also a plus that it removes bodies that could possibly be resurrected from nerco or soul conduit(nemesis).

2nd gem setup.
lvl 1 cwdt with molten shell so it is required lvl 28 + blind + knockback(quality on both is nice).
The idea here is to max lvl blind and knockback so every time molten shell blasts off, it blinds and knockbacks enemy(yes it works, and like a charm).

I do not want to have high lvl molten, because i want it to trigger so often that every monster near me becomes blinded. It also goes off before the cwdt gem re-trigger molten, and in merci it triggers like CRAZY(at least on my melee char). When i get 440 dmg, molten shell becomes active, then cwdt counts down to a new trigger as well as molten shell counts down for the blast off. So they work perfect together at low lvl for this setup.

3rd setup, only 3L since i use it in 1 of my claws.
High lvl cwdt with Cold snap + added cold dmg(quality), with a 4L i would add ele prolif.
Idea is just to freeze everything that dmg me, or at least chills it for a time. I wanted to do freeze mine ele prolif, but it doesnt seem like traps get triggered as they are not mainly counted as spells :)

There are a lot of fun cwdt setups u can do, find something that suits your playstyle.

Another setup i like is:
Lvl 1 cwdt + detonate dead(low lvl, only for fire dmg explosion) + fire pen + inc aoe.

As a spellcaster, u can also try.
High lvl cwdt + ice spear + GMP + cold pen/ele prolif/inc crit chance

Just remember, that u can MAX lvl the support gems that is linked to the casted spells :)

Some people use ice spear + lvl 1 CWdT + PCoC to get power spheres more easily because of the high Ice spear crit chance; meaning you free up a slot in your main skill for another support gem.
