Why would some players be ONLINE and OFFLINE at the same time ?

Hello,
I am not talking about the situation of when a player quit an instance to enter another, at that tiny short moment you would whisper him and get the message : he is not logged in. I am talking about when a player is OFFLINE ( /whois ) but is online when you whisper him! Who are this guys ? Anyone have experienced this ? And yes! Yea, I have tried it a couple of times.

He is online with a diff char. If he has 2 chars lets call them char1 and char2 and he is online with char1 and you whisper char2, he will still get the whisper on char1. If you whois char2 though it will say offline. Whisper work across all chars on account but Whois is char based.
