Dont want to play tetris with my inventory

I did a few searches and did not find anyone else talk about this, so here goes.

The most niggling issue for me, is the rearranging of my inventory so that I can pick up that one more item before heading to town.

I don't want to play tetris with my loot, I just want to carry it back to town.

For simplicity sake, can we not have a system similar to Torchlight where you get X item slots and can put anything in them?

It would still force us to make decisions on what to carry and what to leave behind based on the number of item slots we are allocated.

You didn't search very well. Its very unlikely that this will change. I know some ideas where floated suggesting a volume system akin to some RPGs. White loot is most often not worth taking it back unless you want to use as base for magics/rares. And Magics/Rare as only if you need them for recipes(mostly trans and alt items).

And simplicity isn't really this games thing.
I suggested the use of a Volume/Mass based Inventory System to get rid of the tetris:

But I didn't get much response, maybe I should do some mockups, too.

It is intended that gear can have as many gem slots as it fills inventory slots. That's the payoff.
And this is never going to change.
It's wasted time trying to convince of other systems.

That's not true, 1H weapons can use up to 2x3=6 inventory boxes and 2H need 2x4=8, while the the max gem slot number is 3 respectively 6.

The item inventory size is only tied to the capacity property of an item, which is the reason for many usability problems with item management, eg. tetris minigame, 20+ stash tabs.

For a loot heavy game like POE the usability of item management should be as easy and fast as possible, especially if one income stream comes from selling additional item storage capacity. The player gains nothing but frustration if he can store 500 items in the stash but can't find the one he needs.
