Spawning order

It's never been all that important to me, and it was really hard to verify things like this so misinformation is likely.

When are the drops from chests and monsters determined... at their spawning, or at their opening/death?

With the Expedition mods coming into play in the order we pop them, the point that the drops are determined becomes important. Say you pop a "runic mobs have 50% increased chance of a log book". Does that apply to runic mobs that were already spawned but not killed yet, or only to mobs that spawn after the effect is applied? Should we be waiting for the mods to apply before starting to kill stuff? Knowing the "order of operations" for this starts to be meaningful.

This was the most concise official answer I could find:

When the explosion occurs that hits that Remnant, they apply to all monsters and chests unearthed by that explosion and all subsequent ones.

That doesn't completely answer the question though. It hints at it. Seems like it might imply that the mod is applied to the monsters when they spawn, and not when you kill them. So earlier monsters aren't affected by "runic monsters have X".

Wonder if chests work the same way. You only get "chests are granted X" on all subsequent chests that spawn and it has nothing to do with when you open them.

Wish there was a way to check this.

Quick PSA about how Remnants Work
We quickly wanted to clarify this because some players misunderstood it. Sorry for not being more clear!

Remnants are detonated in a sequence (as your chain of explosives reaches them). When one is detonated, its effects apply to the monsters unearthed by that blast and all subsequent blasts. This is one of the things you need to consider strategically while planning where to place the explosives. You do not need to wait until all explosives have gone off before you start fighting the monsters.

the monsters and chests get these remnant mods when you unearth them, based on what remnants have been destroyed up to that point.

i get 3 booms. First boom just unearths mobs+chests - these have no mods.

2nd boom unearths mobs, chests, and destroys 'monsters immune to cold' - all monsters spawned here and by any subsequent booms will be immune to cold.

3rd boom unearths mobs, chests, and a 'chests drop extra currency' - only chests from here have bonus currency drops. mobs spawned here are immune to cold because of boom #2

I'm going with that interpretation too. Chests get the mods when they spawn... not when they're opened. Monsters get the mod when they spawn... not when they're killed.

I'm pretty sure it's determined on spawning (or exploding) for both mobs and chests.

Any mobs or chests exploded into existence before a given mod is won't have that mod.
